Help, $600 budget gaming machine

Thread Starter
I've seen similar threads in the past but prices change so I figured I seek some help from the OCN Gurus. A buddy of mine was about to buy a E-machine from best buy and luckily I was able to stop him before it was too late. His budget is set at $600 and the machine is 75% geared toward gaming. This is for the tower only. Thanks in advance!!!

Combos like that are often terrible, and that is probably one of the worst I have ever seen. You barely save any money at all and you're getting garbage parts for a pitifully small discount.
You are also missing a hard drive and DVD burner.

Assuming no OS, monitor or peripherals when you said "tower only", Here's my suggestion:
Phenom II x4 955 + GA-870A-UD3 - $228
Kingston HyperX Blu 1600 CL9 - $50, $40 AR
Rosewill Destroyer $40 shipped after promo code EMCKJHE29
Antec NEO ECO 520W - $55 shipped after promo code PSUJAN2011, $40 AR
XFX HD 6850 [buy.com] - $177 (Double lifetime warranty for cheaper than every other HD 6850!)
- $55 shipped (Click "12 new for $53.99" to see $55 shipped price)
Sony Optiarc 24X - $17 shipped

Total cost before rebates: $622
After rebates: $597

Much better parts and still edging into that $600 budget!
Depending on how much gaming your friend does (i.e. if he really doesn't require an HD 6850) you can save with this deal: Gigabyte GTS 450 + Antec NEO ECO 520W - $164 after promo code PSUJAN2011, $140 AR, which'll ease on the budget a lot more and give you money to buy that OS if you need one.

Except for the power supply on the TigerDirect build you found, it actually looks pretty decent. It has no video card and DVD drive, but I'm assuming you would've filled that in. Don't expect to be able to reliably run a high-end video card with that PSU though. It is definitely not reliable.

Edit: there, but it's $650 unless you can cannibalize a HD/DVD.

Aside from going over budget, I still really don't like that built. The NEO ECO 520W which is an excellent S12II Seasonic-built can be had for a lower price than that Delta-built; both are good but the NEO ECO is also great and cheaper. The RAM is okay but I have heard of nothing but problems with AMD users and it. I never recommend it anymore. Rosewill Destroyer has more fans and better features for $5 less. You put in two Biostar A880G+s (they're good boards for the budget but certainly not for unlocking and/or overclocking the Phenom II x2).

Perhaps I should teach you how to easily search for combo deals on Newegg. All in all looks somewhat better but really could use some work - you're getting there. No hard feelings, I don't want you to think I'm trying to attack you, but we're going to have to consider that for ~the same price my build offers a better ATX board with more features/reliability [i.e. 8+2 power phase], 2x cores, a video card that is a tier up from 5770, and twice the HDD space.

Whoops, that TEMPEST EVO is for my ~$800-900 builds, one of the best cases at that price range but it's in a totally different classification.... anyways I fixed it

looks good , but the deal on neo eco 520 is gone so as cpu + mobo
here's what i would recommend :
PSU 50$ AR (can hadle 6850 crossfire)
CPU 125$
Mobo 84$ AR (8+2 power phase , x8x8 CF)
HIS 6850 165$ AR
