Pulling the Trigger on Phenom II Overclock

Thread Starter
OK so I've been searching threads for the last week or so trying to find the best way to squeeze out the Hz without increasing the temps (I'm stuck on stock CPU cooler for the time being)

My goal is to get the system stable before I hand it off to it's rightful owner, my uncle. GPU OC'ing is not a priority, nor is RAM (I think), but if it can be done without my heat or trouble, I'm game.

Completed:
Unlocked 3rd core at stock voltage
Ran Prime95 Blend 3Hrs - Max Temp 59C
Ran Prime95 Inplace Large FFT 1Hr- Max Temp 60C

My plan:
Increment Vcore slowly to see if 4th core will unlock
Increment Vcpu-nb if 4th core is still stubborn
Increment Multiplier to maximum
Check stability / CPU temp with 24Hr Prime95

Maybe?:
Running the OC Tuner Utility in BIOS (I have ASUS mobo)

I think I can live with temps around 65C at full load since I'm still burning it in (cooler can freaks shudder here) and look for a better cooler when he does his next upgrade in the next few months or so.

Whaddya think guys?

Ok, you won't get the multiplier to the max multiplier, (for example I have a Phenom II and mine is nowhere near the max). Secondly, do not use the auto overclock programs, they will screw up all your hard work thus far and generally cause problems. Also, a manual overclock will get much higher than an auto one, with many more times stability too.

Ran Vcore all the way up to 1.4 trying to get that last core. Vcpu-nb was at 1.3. Thinking the 4th core must be defective.

I still have my reservations about auto tuning though BIOS, but it might be interesting to see what it spits back.

I wouldn't try it on the stock heatsink. Wait until you get a new heatsink first.

You can't really overclock at all on the stock HS, maybe an extra .2Ghz cos temps and noise will go through the roof.

You are already too hot.
45nm AMD chips HATE temps above 55 C.
Buy a decent cooler, and run prime 95 for at least 8 hours (I have had rigs fail after 7 hours)
Wrath tops out at 55 C
I can't run any higher Prime 95 stable due to heat.

Tried to up the ref speed and bombed out after a few mins. Can't do anything about the CPU cooler for now, out of funds for the moment. Maybe I can still play with the multi since it is unlocked...

Probably just gonna call it a night here in a bit and do some research on UNDERclocking to maybe get the full load temps down around 50C.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Don't really expect to be able to overclock at all with the 1333 CL9 generic memory - especially considering it's a 2x4GB kit; 4GB DIMM ICs are still in their infancy, I find that many of the 2x4GB generic 1333 CL9 kits are some of the worst overclockers (i.e. 1333 8-9-8 and that's it, you're done, nothing more).

Yeah I was just reading about how uptight G.Skill is about their bins. Probably why I got them for so cheap. Oh well, 8GB is still 7GB more than the system this is replacing.

What's the lowest Vcore anyone has gotten for stable stock speed on a Phenom II X2?
