Nope, for good PSUs, like the HX650, the 650w is the amount provided inside the rig.
At full load, your HX650 will be pulling around 800w from the wall.

but what happens if there are spikes going over 650w components, will the psu "explode".

The TDP numbers are absolute maximum?

so the absolute maximum component watt is 635w for 965be and 3 5850?

no it could more then likely handle some small spikes over 650, but if it went past its limits it would just shut down assuming you had a decent power supply, if you didn't think something might happen

650W is the "Continuous" rating for the HX650's capacity. So at the extreme maximum, it should be able to deliver over 700W (maybe up to 750W) to your system for brief moments.

So let's say that your system is pulling a combined total of 650W from the HX650. If the efficiency were 80%, then the HX650 would be drawing approximately 812W from the wall in order to provide the 650W to the system. So, in this example (under extremely full load), it's providing 650W continuously, and drawing a little over 810W from the wall just to provide the 650W of continuous power to the system.

But now if the efficiency were 85%, then the HX650 would be drawing approximately 765W from the wall in order to deliver the 650W to the system.

So let's say that you have three 5850s in your system and let's say that you're running Furmark on them without an overclock just to test stability. Under this full load, the cards alone would be pulling roughly 450-475W altogether. Now, the HX650 has a +12V capacity of 624W. So if we say that all three 5850s would be pulling 475W from the PSU under the highest GPU load possible, then that leaves 149W on the +12V. Fortunately, it's unlikely that you'll be putting any load on the CPU during a Furmark test which means the HX650 should have enough power.

In other words, it should be able to handle your system with three 5850s in it, but it may not have enough power if you were to overclock them. And if you wanted to fold on both the CPU and all three 5850s at the same time, then you might be out of luck.

So this is basically what we mean by it'll be cutting it close, but it would definitely not be able to handle your system with four 5850s in it.

their is really no point in the tri CF.

first tri CF got lots of problems and second it will be a much better choice to sell them and try to get a 6950CF or a 6970CF
or maybe a GTX570SLI...

and you would want something like a 750W PSU for this and if you plan to overclock everything and your CPU I would recomand to spend alittle more on a 850W

a 850HX can handle the tri CF pretty good
or if you dont care of modular system you can even get a 950TX cheaper then a 850HX and it will hold a QUAD cf of 5850

But even after overclocking everything, a quality 700W would be just fine to power a system with two 6970s in it.

And if going with three 5850s and overclocking them is a must, then I would recommend a quality 750W. But any PSU that's "bigger" than this is overkill. :/

thanks for the very insightful and helpful info.

My upgrade next year should be a bigger case, mobo and a third 5850.

Sounds like I could even run the 965 C3 at 1.40v and 3.7ghz.

Dual PSUs is a potential can of worms you probably don't want to open. If you really must have triple or quadruple 5850s, then get you should just a new PSU altogether to power it all up.
