BC2 maxes one core and barely touches the rest - Page 3

You guys do realize that what Windows reports as the per-core CPU usage is total BS, right?

Consider the following graph I just created running BFBC2 at super low settings (to maximize CPU load). Notice that it APPEARS that this game can use up to 6 threads out of the 8 that I have ...

Now consider this graph, wherein I summarized all the CPU usage into one graph. Notice how, other than one little blurb right when started up the game, my usage hovers at almost exactly 50% total of my CPU?

This is a sure sign that the game can only use 4 out of my 8 total cores/threads.

IOW, the Windows usage graph that shows 6 cores/threads in use .. it's made-up bullcrap. And you should pretty much always take what it says with a huge grain of salt.

Honestly, that is a silly thing to say.

What is the level of 'CPU intensity'?

Is it, like, 74?

And the 'GPU Intensity', is what, like 52?

My rig is CPU-limited if I run the game at 1024x768 w/No AA or HBAO ... but then it isn't when I run it at 1920x1200, 32xAA, w/everything maxed.

The degree to which you are CPU or GPU bottlenecked depends on what hardware you have, and what settings you run the game at on that hardware.

I might have been lucky but I get max usage. With game on, tab out, task manager, processes, right click bfbc2.exe, set affinity, all cores. Try that.

That's because you have 4 cores, which is how many the game can use

this makes sense because I saw little to no improvement when I went from the phenom II 945 to my current 1055t, both at 3.8 ghz

I'm not really seeing how this proves that the game only uses 4 cores. If it's hovering around 50% total usage, wouldn't that mean 4 out of 8 cores are running at 100%? I think it would suggest that 6 cores are running at closer to 66%.

4/8 cores * 100% = 50% total usage
6/8 cores * 66% = 50% total usage

4/8 cores * 100% = 50% total usage
6/8 cores * 66% = 50% total usage
A logical question

The simple answer is this: The fact that total CPU usage is hovering at 50%, in a cpu-dependent scenario (due to the low settings), means that the game is really coded to use only 4 threads/cores.

You see, if a game is coded to use 6 cores, and one creates a CPU-dependent scenario by using very graphically-easy-to-run settings (which I did), then total CPU usage would hover around 75% (6/8), not 50%, like it does.

I realize that this may not come across as iron-clad 'proof', but you can trust me when I say ... Windows Task Manager basically lies when it shows you individual core/thread usage when gaming, and that BFBC2 is coded for 4 cores, period.

I see you have a 6-core CPU yourself, right? Try lowering the graphics settings as low as you possibly can, and doing the same thing I did in my screenies. I am about 98% sure you'll find that your total CPU usage will hover at 66% pretty much the whole time. So ask yourself this ... if this game can use 6 cores, why can you not get 100% total cpu usage no matter how fast you make the game run?

Somethin I realize that I forgot to clarify, which I suppose is really the heart of the matter here: Even if a game is only coded to use 4 cores/threads, WINDOWS can farm out those threads to more than 4 different cores (be those physical or virtual, i.e. HT).

So ... when you see 6 cores/threads in action in Task Manager, you are actually 'using' all 6 cores ... BUT ... if the game is coded for 4, you'll *never* use all 6 to full capacity at one time.

Thus, the level at which total CPU usage maxes out (again, you must create a cpu-dependent scenario for this to work, which typically involves low gfx settings) is what actually tells you how many cores/threads the game is coded to use.

You simply multiply the total cpu usage % at which your game 'hovers' by how many cores/threads you have. So in the case of BFBC2, my tptal CPU usage hovers at 50%, and I have 8 'virtual' cores, so 50% of 8 = 4.

IOW, the count of the number of threads in Task Manager that you see 'action' on is totally deceptive ... it DOES NOT tell you how many 'cores' the game is 'coded for'.

The reason this is important is because having more cores than what the game is coded for will do you absolutely no extra good in terms of performance (well, aside from being able to better handle the occasional windows side tasks while the game is running ).
