Windows 7 upgrade clean install

Thread Starter
Making a PC for the first time. I have no existing XP or 7 systems to load, but I want to take advantage of the student deal for the Windows 7 Pro upgrade. Will I be able to use this with no other operating systems in place?

Do you already own a genuine version of Windows, such as 2000/XP/Vista?

Might be able to find an old one somewhere but I really doubt it. What if I don't?

I purchased the Windows 7 pro student discount and it will install from a clean install and run but the validation code does not work... At least mine didn't work.

It's just that I am only really "allowed" to show how to perform this type of install with the Windows 7 Upgrade if it's technically an upgrade.

What's a validation code? Is this something unique to the student discount?

So how does the upgrade work? Do I get a small trial to work on before I have to verify it or something?

The answer to the original question is NO..

You are required to have a legal copy of Windows already installed and running to use the Upgrade Option, otherwise it will do a fresh install, and if all it is an special Upgrade disc, then it would most likely fail to load even..

You can buy a legal copy of Windows 7 for around $100 to $110, it's called the System Builder Disc, since you built the system yourself, that would be the best option, because nobody can steal your key, it's locked to the computer you originally install it on, unfortunately if your MB or CPU fails, well, that's bad news...

Since MSDN/Technet allows you to download ISOs to burn to install Windows 7, it would be best to buy directly from Microsoft, and I'd register it with them once you have it loaded, this way there is NO QUESTION as to IF you own a copy of it, they will let you reload it if your motherboard fails without requiring you to send them information (receipts etc)...
