Optical Audio - Gaming

Thread Starter
Hi there,
at the moment I have 5.1 Surround sound set up, and it's hooked up to my Computer via a Optical Audio cable ( Toslink )

The Surround sound is a cinema System, and the only inputs are Toslink, and RCA ports ( red and white )

so what I wanted to no, is how can I get games to see this as 5.1 Surround sound? It's fine for playing Movies, but when I play a game, it's only stereo audio. I used to use 3.5mm jack to the Red and white RCA ports, But then when I saw my cinema System had a Toslink input, I went and got a cable to use the onboard optical Audio.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Josh

Alright, it all really depends on your setup, but for now, I will give you a general run down of how audio equipment works.

So, Optical, Coaxial and USB will all transmit audio signal digitally. Then, before it can be played, it must be converted to analog.

The red white cables are analog (so your computer converted them from digital already). They are simply left and right speakers.

an optical cable will transmit 5.1 audio to your speakers. So, if you use a optical cable (onboard for your mobo) and then let your speaker system convert it to analog, then you should have surround sound.

I gave general info there and I hope it answered your question. If not, let me know.

Thanks for the reply, It did help, But I still can't "get" Surround sound in games. So say like GTA IV, I can only select Stereo or Headphones, It's doesn't show up as " Surround sound "

How are your speakers setup in the audio options of windows (control panel)?

Not an audio expert but from a logical standpoint if the software doesn't have surround sound to begin with then you probably can't get it. Your receiver is capable of surround sound but if the game/audio source is only in stereo then it's only stereo. And it seems that just because you have the capability of surround sounds doesn't neccessarily mean you can expect surround sound in everything that you do on your computer. (Unless GTA IV has surround sound support, dunno....)

@OP

You need games that are capable of delivering digitally produced sound in 5.1 digital audio, as in something like:

Bad Company 2 using DD Live! (Dolby Digital Live)

On top of that, the audio output (onboard/soundcard) needs to have 5.1 DD Live capabilities (decoding/encoding) and your receiver must have the same (decoding/encoding) to accept/distribute 5.1 channels.

The only other way is to use analog (5.1 via 3.5mm sound jacks) connections.

@OP, The last Gigabyte board I had with the same onboard as yours (889A) had DTS Connect, I'm just guessing yours will be the same but it may not, you could have DTS-Connect, DolbyDigitalLive or neither.

To get 5.1 over optical in games you'll need either DTS-Connect or DolbyDigitalLive, if you have one of them it should be an option in the output format in the Realteck HD Audio Center. In Windows set sound as 5.1 and in the game set either Windows Default or 5.1 (I've had games where setting 5.1 doesn't work and I needed to set windows default), and you'll need your reciever to support whichever of the two your using.

IIRC in the HD Audio Manager, Digital Out, Default Format Tab, Select either DTS-Connect or DolbyDigitalLive, if you don't have either then without a live encoder all you'll get is pre-encoded 5.1 (movies, ect.).
