To Windows 7 or not to Windows 7? (current XP) - Page 3

Resource efficient, sleek intuitive interface, wide range of hardware compatibility, and most of all you can utilize all the ram in your machine and further down the line if you drop more ram in.

And if you ever need to use XP in the future (It can be hard to get certain legacy games to play nice with Windows 7) you could always run a virtual machine or dual-boot.

XP was my jam back in the day but moving onto Windows 7 would be a good thing to do.
Not to mention, you can Dual-Boot Windows 7 64-bit and Windows XP 64-bit, use all your RAM, and double-dip.

I used to do that with Windows Vista.

The answer is:

It clearly and mainly depends upon your hardware, and specifically which editions to install is highly dependent upon hardware as well..

You would install the Home Basic or Home Premium 32 Bit edition on dual core systems with 2 GB of RAM...

Quad Core with 4 GB of RAM or more is definitely worthy of Windows 7 (any edition of 64 Bit).

The problem is Windows 7 Sucks up a lot of RAM at IDLE! (900 MB to 1.2 GB).

More than that, it runs A LOT of Services, and the svchost.exe isn't exactly awesome.

Not to mention if you have all the security features enabled with a virus scanner and say a Proprietary Firewall installed, then you are definitely wanting to ensure you have fast and powerful hardware BEFORE you install Windows 7.

For all other purposes, IGNORE VISTA, it's worthless...

XP or Windows 7, that's the bottom line, and if you have dual core with older games/software, then stick with XP, you will be glad you did...

However, on an ending note, security in Windows 7 is 4X what XP has to offer, and that's a HUGE difference, pretty much.

Might as well try the dual boot option. I installed windows 7. They indeed look great up to now and everything feels more smooth and I do not mean only the graphics part. It feels as if moving things around is faster, like it uses a new way of copying or moving. I tried Assassin's Creed 2. Indeed its slightly slower than my XP.. but i am guessing thats because when I look at the texture Ezio's cape seemed like it was made by actual real cloth >>. I never was crazy with graphics but I can see the difference between them. Looks more realistic. I know that Win7 do not use the same Dual boot "system" donno how to call it, but from tinkering around computers of friends that ask for my help at times it feels like it uses a "program" at startup. Well anyway I am not very knowledgeable but my point is. Can you install WinXP after you have Win 7 on? And if yes will this cause problems? (as in since it was installed after)

I run both windows xp 32 and windows 7 x64, yes windows 7 is pretty impressive with its features but I still like XP. ANYWAY if I was you I would upgrade my system over getting windows 7(or do both) but I wouldn't say windows xp is useless (or obsolete rather.) Also you could use something called EASYBCD to edit the boot files of your computer so you can switch between XP and 7. Its what I did.

Edit: I used this guide http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...dows-7-xp.html

At one time XP held more than 80% of the desktop market, but those days are gone. I have 3 XP rigs running right now as I see no reason to ditch rigs that are fully fuctional. The real work does get done with Win 7 machines. Every once in a while a need for an XP rig comes up but I can work much faster in Win 7.

Im currently switching over now.......and going from Xp to Win7 64bit. You know it did feel a little slower when I was just clicking and moving but I also was having some problems with my motherboard and ended up having to send it in with only testing it for like a hour. I have been patiently waiting on a vista machine and it feels like it may be a little faster than 7 but it sucks everywhere else. I loved Xp and I didn't want to switch but I finally had to give in since times are changing and support for it is pretty much out of here.

Xp was def the win95 game changer all over again. Is 7 that ummm I can't really say but in your defense I think 7 would do you some good but like someone suggested you might want to make a few hardware upgrades and stay on Xp or heck do both.
