You would install the Home Basic or Home Premium 32 Bit edition on dual core systems with 2 GB of RAM...

Quad Core with 4 GB of RAM or more is definitely worthy of Windows 7 (any edition of 64 Bit).

The problem is Windows 7 Sucks up a lot of RAM at IDLE! (900 MB to 1.2 GB).

More than that, it runs A LOT of Services, and the svchost.exe isn't exactly awesome.

Not to mention if you have all the security features enabled with a virus scanner and say a Proprietary Firewall installed, then you are definitely wanting to ensure you have fast and powerful hardware BEFORE you install Windows 7.

For all other purposes, IGNORE VISTA, it's worthless...

XP or Windows 7, that's the bottom line, and if you have dual core with older games/software, then stick with XP, you will be glad you did...

However, on an ending note, security in Windows 7 is 4X what XP has to offer, and that's a HUGE difference, pretty much.
I disagree. svchost.exe is a required process for the operation system, so it has to be there. Anit-Virus programs no longer use a large amount of resources. His system is juts fine for Windows 7. Hell, my parents machine runs it just fine. He has a decent dual core, with 4GBs of RAM, so I hae no idea why you would tell him to use 32 bit.

OP, your computer is perfect for Windows 7. Switch to it for a little bit, try it out. I think you will come to love it. And honestly, it's time to move on from XP.
OP, ignore some of the fanboy comments. Honestly, the choice is mostly personal. I prefer Windows 7 (feels more modern/more secure, etc), but depending on your usage, XP will be fine. It may not be worth the money for you to upgrade. For gaming specifically, the real difference is DX10/11. Oh, and in response to your having trouble in the past with 64bit OSs, 64bit is becoming the new standard, and doesn't have any of the compatibility problems that plagued it years back. Best of luck OP.

Well for now everything works fine. Nice to know that nowadays 64bit systems do not have compatibility problems. I still need to know though if installing WinXP after will give me problems ^^;;; If its at all possible to install an older OS after newer OS.

I see no slowdowns like I mentioned in anything but in some games that I tried. Actually.. some games run better. I am not a fan of perfect image. I usually never use antialising or too much shadows. Since my first PC had just dos and windows 3.1 for me everything after that felt wonderful. I had Win95 running on a poor 486 with 33MHz and 16MB ram .. poor pc must have hated me.

To me the only failure as a system was Vista. Installed them once and I was glad I tried them from a friend that has an I cafe and lend me the disk. Couldn't stand them for more than a week. Anyway as it seems 7 do not have much different for me in gaming either. Although some games that I had problems with playing in general seem to work smoother or actually work!

I run dual boot Windows 7 and XP. Dont think I have been on the XP partition for months. I kept it to run old games on like MCM2 that you have to jump through several hoops on 7 to get it to run.

Just partition off a segment of your hdd and install xp .

If the performance will not get improved in gaming i am sticking to XP then until I upgrade.

You actually get better performance with DX10 enabled, it's got better optimizations, more so now with the later revisions. My 8800GT gets 35FPS on Crysis, even with the "enhancement" patch/mod. I don't know if it uses more resources or not, but it definitely increases performance. This was really obvious in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. when I upgraded, I noticed a huge difference in performance from DX9 to DX10 as well as quality.

You would see more gain in games by getting a better video card than you would OS.

OEM Windows 7 Professional at Newegg for $140, or...

ATI 57770 for $140.

But if all he cares about are games, you will never notice. I could put you in front of 10 computers, five with xp and five with windows 7 and so long as they are all in a game, you will never be able to know which one is win 7 and which one is xp.

Dude let me tell you. I recently had windows XP x32 running DC Universe online. With a brand new CPU, vid card and everything. The game used to crash on me all the time even on lower settings. Then I upgraded to Win 7 x64. It was simply night and day for me. Wonder why I didn't switch sooner. It could have something to do with me running XP in 32 bit. But when I went to 7 x64, it changed my gaming life. LOL!
