460 SLI Idle Temps w/ Dual Monitors.. Seem Right?

I am running 460s at 850mhz @ 1.075v (one of them is a pretty miserable clocker, and I am debating sending it back)

My big question is whether these temps I am seeing are normal. I have reapplied TIM twice and same result. Heatsink is getting plenty hot so I am not worried about heat transfer. Also have a custom fan profile running which does well.

My temps are as follows: (assume 850mhz and 1.075v)

Idle (SLI On) - ~49C on both
Idle (SLI Off) - 44C Top 36C Bottom

Load (SLI On running BC2 @ Max) - ~72C
Load (SLI Off w/ Kombustor on 32xAA/Max Res) - 65C

I realize the load temps seems fine for SLI, but I am wondering why these cards don't clock down for idle when SLI mode is enabled... seems like a hot idle to me.

CPU is watercooled, and the Case Intake is the 240 rad which has ap-15 gentle typhoons push/pull on it. Air coming off it is aimed directly at the cards and is not warm. Still running a 140mm top exhaust and a 120mm high speed yate for my rear exhaust by cpu socket. (moves a TON of hot air during GPU load)

I guess these seem relatively normal ? (its more than enough power for me considering i run a 1680x1050 monitor (for the 120hz =D)

Normal, with sli off your not using one of the cards so naturally it will be a lower temperature - my sli downclocks, but it never gets down to the "idle" temperature that it is at when the computer was first started vs. when a game is first used - temps seem pretty good as well

They wont dn clock w/ multi monitors hooked up. (1680x1050)x2 thats why it doesnt down clock!
Dont run kombuster too much. The only time you really need it, as if your having problems, or to check your oc. If its stable leave it alone.

It can and will smoke your cards.

Those temps seem about right. You have both mointors on the top card correct?

Ill keep that in mind. Thanks... I had heard something similar regarding multi monitors and memory clocks or something but couldnt find anything definitive.

Finding stable overclocks is a pain. Even with kombuster i dont always see the artifacting until i spot some random corner of a room in a game that is flickering black...

I think im happy with where it is... definitely not some 950mhz overclock, but plenty of power.

Figure ill run these til they drop and get grab something new in 6-8 months.

That sounds about right, just having a second monitor plugged in raised my temps considerably. I am suprised that you need that many volts for 850, but it's all luck of the draw I guess.

Are your cards sandwiched together? I just move my bottom card to my x4 slot and say maybe 5ish fps loss, but it helped cool my top card by almost 20c.

I was doing a folding experiment a few days ago and with just my bottom card folding my top card was STILL higher just from the heat being put off by the bottom card.

The card on top will always be hotter since it's pulling in air from the air sitting on the of the GPU on the bottom which is giving off the warm air if that makes sense.

Nah 1 slot separation between them.

I have the worst luck with graphics cards... I have not gotten a single good clocking GPU in the past 6+ years. I always fall far short of similar rigs / reviews.

My upper card will do like 875 @ 1.075v... bottom one will not really do any more than 850mhz. Pretty depressing... still contemplating just returning them all.

I had another one too, thing went into melt down at 1.062v. I keep telling myself to get away from MSI products because they always let me down, but the price always bring me back.

your temps are cooler than mine i have 2x 260gtx in sli + a 9800gtx for physx, currently idle the 260's are sitting at 54c the 9800 is sitting at 37c 2x bottom intake fans blowing up as the 9800gtx is the bottom card it gets the full force of the intakes + its duel fan blower...

your temps seem pretty normal to me i would be happy with them on my 260's gonna be upgrading to 560s shortly so i can finally see all the fuss of dx11 lolz

Yea i have a GT220 running a passive arctic cooling accelero aluminum heatsink minus the fan in the bottom 4x slot for my HDTV. Thing runs ice cold, was just a paint to fab my own mounting brackets for the odd mounting wholes on the low profile card. Doesnt seem to affect temps, but I would imagine the bottom card would get better air if it wasn't there.

Im tempted to return the 460s and get 560s as well. Been bouncing the idea around for a few days now... just such a hassle to return stuff.
