Questions on programming server

Sup guys

I am wanting to create a test server out of an old HP PC, I will be wiping the hard drive and installing Ubunto. However i am not very familiar with this particular program. I am familiar with call Jquery from an external link, but i was wanting to be able to call it from my test server so it never leaves the "lab" when im writing my site. Does anyone have any suggestions? My overall go is to have a test server with PHP, Jquery and .net framework installed for tests on my network. I do have some legit free server OSes and some windows OSes. Educate me, please . . .

what are you trying to do? Emulate a website?
Best thing to do is emulate a production environment that you'll be uploading to.

If you install Ubuntu on the machine, you will not be able to test sites on the .NET platform. .NET requires IIS, which is only on Windows.

If you really need to test .NET, you can install windows on the PC, then install XAMPP to test PHP/MySQL

Windows 7 Professional comes with IIS 7.5, which is Microsoft's most recent web server suite. It can easily run both .NET and PHP sites. Of course, Windows isn't free, but you can't reliably run .NET sits on a non-Windows server.

If you're a student you can get a copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 for free from Microsoft's DreamSpark program.
