Backing up media and Hardware

Thread Starter
Its a real pain swapping dvd's over all the time in HTPC, and would prefer them saved to the hard drive, is there any software to back them up to the hard drive without loss of quality in sound or graphics. Also I'm after some software that will allow me to organise them well and play, bit like the windows media centre, unless that is the best one. Also what sort of minimum spec would you recommend for blu-ray playback on a 42" HD TV. As my HTPC is a fair bit dated now and getting bored of using Linux.

try "makemkv" (just google the exact term, not sure if I'm allowed to link this) - that saves a perfect quality copy of your movie, including all languages/subtitles etc. Even does blurays. All of the mediacentres support mkvs, so you should be fine. A Bluray rip will be round 30 gigs though, so you need space if you want top quality

I have just started backing up my DVD's. I am using majicdvdripper (~$30, IIRC), which makes perfect copies sans menu, previews, etc. The files are huge though (I'm ripping them at 100%), so I am going to start looking into a mkv converter to save space - I've seen some movies at half the size of mine look just as good. I then use 'yammm' to add cover art and details, then watch them in WMC.
