8gb vs 16gb?

Thread Starter
I just got a promo from newegg this week to get 8gb Ripjaws for $89 with free shipping. My question is, will there be a difference in performance if i get 16gb. I will be using my new build for heaving gaming and the normal other stuff. I can afford it, but if its not really needed to need to waste almost $100.

thanks

you really dont need it, I had 6gb for a while on an i7 setup
i eventually Downgraded to 4gb, but for faster ram./

i game heavily and i NEVER use 4.0gb of ram,

ram speed/timings is more important than the capacity.

There is already no noticeable difference between 4 and 8 GB for gaming. 16 GB is a huge, huge waste.

There will be 0 performance increase unless you actually use that much RAM. Having more RAM doesn't make a computer faster, unless you're using it.

The sweet-spot for gaming is around 4 to 6.

well i had 3 gb in i7. Yes a i7 not i5. And 3 dimms are needed, One thing. 32 bit os only can see 3.2 gb of ram. that includes gpus and sound. On 64 bit os. limit is 128 ? Owell 8 gb of ram is good. I noticed from 3 gb of ram to 6 gb was a little better Smoother in games. But 16gb is to much for just gameing.

8GB is enough... I have 4GB atm and I use 95% of it all the time, between win7, world of warcraft and black ops on at the same time. With 6GB on my i7 950 i was in heaven.

I'd rather put that extra 100 dollars into an SSD for example. Especially for gaming.

I would say 2.5GB is enough for gaming, when I play Dead space 2, Crysis, DMC4 or Battlefield P4F I never go above 2.0GB RAM usage.

This, sort of.

If the OP is using RAM intensive games or running multiple games at once, he should upgrade. I went from 4 to 8 and it helped out because I was frequently running at 98% RAM usage. Upgraded to 8gb and now am steadily at 5-6gb usage without problems.
