WD VelociRaptor or SSD for OS drive?

Thread Starter
Okay, long story short, I need to get a new OS drive to replace my aging WD 250GB. What do you guys think; the WD VelociRaptor 300GB, or an OCZ Vertex 2 (haven't decided on which GB yet but no bigger than the 120GB)?

SSD. The only time I'd say Raptors is if you raid 2-3 of them. But that'll only get you bulk speed (which is actually quite a lot). But striped HDDs won't touch SSDs in access times. Not to mention, 2-3 raptor wouldn't be cheap either.

You are a gamer, 128gb goes very fast when you have Windows 7 plus 3-4 new games. The SSD will be faster, there is zero doubt about that, but do you want to be constantly uninstalling games to install something else? If 256gb SSDs were in the $2-300 price range, that would be a price more easily swallowed. Honestly, I have had several SSD's and Velociraptors, and for gaming and everyday usage my opinion is that SSDs are generally overrated by most users, expecially ones with an already fast system like yours. Just my .02

SSD will make your windows feel snappier, but loading games and long program loads won't be much faster. SSD's win in random read write, HD's win in sequential. There was a thread about the arguement before.

I have to respectfully disagree. An SSD is hands down *the best* performance upgrade you can drop into most "fast" desktops these days. Applications open in a snap, and boot times are nil. I love my Kingston V-Series (and it's a budget SSD!). I'll never go back.

RAPTOR is more stable and solid... with SSD after a year or so it's start loosing "Brain Cells"
it's not the main point really fast SSD cost a lot of money, simply over priced.

Until SSDs significantly drop in price I will deal with the 10-20sec slower boot time.
