5970 99% GPU usage on idle on any driver past 10.10E - Page 2

Any driver past 10.10E gives me this issue. Reading around shows it's fairly commonplace, particularly with the 5970. Any idea how to fix this? I'd really love to use the 11.1's, since they give me a bit of an FPS boost.

Any of you guys experiencing the same issue? If so, how do you resolve it (other than the obvious rollback of drivers)?

Note: These are 11.1's, though Afterburner shows them as 10.11 for some reason.
Not happening here.

Odd that ab shows 10.11.

Try this:
  • Uninstall current drivers via Uninstall Progs
  • Choose express uninstall all ATI software
  • Restart to safemode
  • Use DCPro, not driver sweeper.
  • Select ATI, nothing else, clean.
  • Go to C:\\Program Files (x86)See below image Manually deleted any driver folders left, only driver folders, do not delete the cap folder.
  • Restart normal mode
  • Install driver using custom manual, install only the driver at this time, on a good install you'll see the folder does not exist message, would you like to create.
  • Restart and monitor usage.
  • Looks good, install the rest of the package.

Also if you've disabled ulps, you need to enable before you attempt driver changes.

BTW I'm running the 11.1a driver with 11.1 ccc.

EDIT> I was wrong, the correct folder to delete is here.

That is odd; I had an HD5970 until last week and I never had driver issues with latest.

Latest I used were 10.11a hotfix, and I had no issues with those.

When I get back after work, I'll see if Im getting the same issue, must say I haven't noticed it yet. also im running 11.1a 26th Jan hotfix driver and not official 11.1
post #14 of 36
I am running into the same issue with the same drivers. Also my AB also says 10.11. I think I might just roll back to 10.11 for now.

EDIT: Sorry for bumping a semi old thread I'm having the same issue and this seemed easier then making a whole new thread

I noticed it yesterday and it is only GPU 1 that gets stuck on 100%. It seems to happen after running some 3D applications and restarting is the only way I know for GPU 1 to downclock. I thought maybe the BIOS I've flashed could have been the problem but it seems to be the latest drivers.

Well I would guess the driver did it because so far now know of 4 people that have had this same problem.

I have also had this problem for the last few drivers. I don't know when it started but Im on 11.1 and its having that problem. I thought it was just my last card that I had to RMA but it's this one too.

Just noticed this myself, that's why I'm in this forum.

11.1's were pretty good too, ah well. I'll just reboot I 'spose

Thread Starter
HD5970/Crossfire users, simply restart the second entry for your card(s) on Device Manager, and it'll reset GPU usage.

If you use an OC utility (Afterburner, etc.), make sure to restart the app as well right after to re-apply your OC settings.

I created the following batch file to use with devcon to automate this whenever the issue rears its ugly head:

Code:
@echo off
taskkill /IM MSIAfterburner.exe /F
devcon restart =display @"PCI\\VEN_1002&DEV_689C&SUBSYS_C000174B&REV_00\\6&AA78615&0&00400018"
@timeout /T 5 /NOBREAK
start /b "MSI Afterburner" "c:\\Program Files (x86)\\MSI Afterburner\\MSIAfterburner.exe"
Clears it right up. No need to restart. Alternatively, you could do a sleep/wake cycle instead.

I noticed I was having this issue a few days ago.
I spent a lot of time doing google searches trying to figure it out to no avail.
I was kind of worried about it as I couldn't see it being good for my card to run at 99% all the time.
I decided to try uninstalling MSI Afterburner just to see...The problem is now gone.
So, maybe people can stop blaming ATI's drivers because for me, it was def. MSI afterburner causing the issue.
Try uninstalling it and reboot.
