5970 99% GPU usage on idle on any driver past 10.10E - Page 3

I personnally can't do that since MSI AB is managing my fan profile and my two cards need it.

I don't think this is AB fault. This issue isn't persistant, it happens quite randomly but each time it's after a use of the GPU (HD video, games, Encoding ...). This is definitly a driver issue for multi GPUs.
Even though AB or CCC are reading 99% th GPU is working perfectly, what is wrong is only the reading IMO.

The only fix I've found is to disable the faulty GPU and reenable it. Otherwise the only solution is to reboot.

LOL
You can do that, you just don't want to because your OC is more important then fixing the problem.
I used AB for the same reason as you, but I really can't see it doing me any favors if it causes my gpu to run at 99% at all times.
The choice is yours.

Least it's not like people with NVidia drivers who can't play Dragon Age 2 8P. To omit one of the years biggest games is a big mistake on part of a GPU developer.

It's a problem with afterburner. Happens on my 6950's as well on a fresh boot. I usually open/close GPU-Z to fix it.

Afterburner problem-try unchecking force 3D clocks,or re-install/update AB.

BTW, my first assumption was that it was just the sensor reading it wrong, but I also use a gadget that monitors usage "GPU monitor" by Igogo (http://www.myfavoritegadgets.info/) which always worked fine before, as well my gpu temp was about 10 degrees higher then normal. So I concluded its def not utilizing 99% of my vid card or my temps would be much higher, however it IS utilizing something to make the temp go up about 10 degrees. I'm not comfortable with things running that way when they shouldn't be running at all.

As far as drivers go, its a tough job, I wouldn't want to be responsible for writing a driver to be compatible with millions and millions of computers, not to mention millions and millions of games, as well as millions and millions of people's random usage...etc etc.
Both sides have their issues, it just seems when it comes to ATI everyone blames them for drivers before ever considering anything else...like in this case.

I decided to try uninstalling MSI Afterburner just to see...The problem is now gone.
So, maybe people can stop blaming ATI's drivers because for me, it was def. MSI afterburner causing the issue.
Try uninstalling it and reboot.
Have you checked Catalyst Control Center AMD Overdrive for GPU Activity on both GPUs?

I uninstalled MSI Afterburner rebooted the system and played a 2D game while monitoring CCC GPU Activity. It still gets stuck at 99% even with MSI Afterburner uninstalled.

Oh wait... You're on a single HD5850?

It's NOT MSI AB fault !And for the record even without AB running CCC is reading 99% of GPU use.
I rolled back to 10.10E and the problem is now gone !

AMD stated that they were able to reproduce the issue on their own. That means we should see an upcoming driver to fix that issue.

I had this same issue when I had single 6950 and when I had them crossfire. Both time it was MSI AFTER BURNER for me. Stopping MSI Afterburner fixed the issue both times.

Ya I'm on a single.
There are apparently a few things that can cause this. MSI AB is one of them.
Try disabling HW acceleration in firefox. Apparently that can cause it too.
