Stemming from all the discussion over the Intel chipset defect. I've read that some are saying it's not that big of a deal because:
  • You can still use SATA III ports, which may be plentiful depending on what motherboard and how many HDD's you have
  • It's only 5% to 15% defect rate, chances are you probably won't ever see your ports degrade at all
  • Even if it degrades it possibly only slow data transfer speed, not data integrity
  • Even if it degrades it's probably not instantaneous failure but over a year or two

Part of me feels that people are saying that to make themselves feel better after spending a ton on shiny new stuff only to find out it needs repair. Which is fine and I would too but it seems like to me that most people DO care down inside and are maybe still in semi-denial?

This is not meant to be flaming/bashing/etc. but it's a serious question and to spur rational and civil discussions on the matter at hand. Thank You.

I've noticed a lot of people saying to just go and purchase a PCI card. That's not really resolving the issue is it? That's kinda like just curing the symptoms while the sickness is still there.

I know that if I were to purchase $1000 in new hardware, I'd want the guarantee that it works like it should. If that requires me having to return everything and wait for them to fix it, so be it. As long as I don't have to pay to return it, I'm fine with doing so.

Personally, I'm waiting for the Z68 chipset before jumping into Sandy Bridge. If I did have a motherboard that's affected, though, I'd definitely RMA it (perhaps not right away, but eventually). The SATA controller not corrupting any data is of prime importance to me. I could care less about CPU or GPU failures. If the GPU fails, big deal, I can always replace it. If your drive filled with family photos and videos gets corrupted, that's a bigger loss. Needless to say, you should always have back-up set in place but why even take a chance?

True, but if you can just plug a card in and not worry about it, then when you move on/upgrade you can do an RMA and sell the old board..

Saves the down time, and I am not real sure what kind of turn around manufacturers will have at this point, but I imagine with thousands of people returning boards to be fixed your not going to see it shipped back very fast...

I know for me down time sucks, so the less of it the better...

as I dont even use more than 2 ports, it doesnt affect me, but as I will sell it sometime I would like to have the version that works with all ports, so thats why I think I will exchange it, otherwise I wouldnt.

Mine is a folding rig, only sata drive plugged into the ports is a sata3 drive with the os on it. No need to do anything on that one. If it was my main pc, I'd move the HDs to the sata3 and leave the bluray drive on the sata2 port. It's not like it's going to burn my house down if I don't replace it.

i disagree with you on the first part not because i own sandy bridge tech but because i think your analogy is off.

i don't think it is an "sickness" because it doesnt affect the entire system. It may slow down the connect speed of the sata 2.0 sometime down the road (time depends on your usage i assume). also if you do get a pci card to use for sata it would solve the issue. however the majority of us don't use more than 2 storage devices on the sata, for which we can just plug into the 3.0 instead.

but i do agree with you on the 2nd part. If you spend that kind of money you should be promised that everything is working 100%. in this case at least the problem doesn't affect the entire south bridge and it does not in no way shape or form introduce error in data.

i hope you understand where i'm coming from.
