MSI NF980-G65 mosfet burnt up!

Thread Starter
I was using my computer two days ago and it instantly turned off. No BSOD or nothing. Turning it back on resulted in tons of smoke and a dead motherboard. I have no way to check my CPU until I get the board back.. when this happens is it usually isolated to just the board?

MSI accepted my RMA but I haven't had a chance to ship it yet. I have my fingers crossed that they replace the board with no problem since I have no money to throw at this. I fold 24/7 and the board is three months old - its ran stock the whole time I've had it! I'm pretty disappointed with MSI being this the first product I've had from them.

Anyways I was I thinking I might sell/part out my computer when I get the mobo back and move to a laptop. I'm never home, especially in the Summer and it is way more my style. I've been checking out the Alienware m11x for portability but miss my 15" Macbook Pro a lot, so many options to sort through and find what is best for the price.

msi mobos dont work well with overclocked thubans. could be poor quality components or design flaws. likely both.

I don't see why a mosfet failure would fry the cpu, i think you should be fine

Let us know how it goes!

Into the horror stories list it goes...
Second or third I've seen with this board so far. There's an ASUS nVidia 980A chipset board that is much better, just no tri-SLI.

I think the reason this failed is that these mosfets aren't low RDS, and they use plain mosfet cheaps in place of the MOSFET driver which is cheap. It was a third transistor (placed in place of a MOSFET driver) and not a primary transistor that failed on your board.

Can those be swopped out for the MOSFET or is there more than just the single week componant at stake here?

Don't think you can do that, there's probably more to it i.e. board layout, transistor size support, PWM controller...

What about using better build quality parts in place of the week ones that blow out, is there such a thing?
