Can I hit 4.0ghz?

Thread Starter
I wanted to know if its possible to hit 4.0ghz on air with my system. Running Prime95 Blend at everything Auto/Normal except my CPU/NB Voltage @ 1.400v and my max temps are 43c. Is there alot of room for improvment and is it possible? And if it is can you guys help a noob?

My RAM is currently @ 1333mhz 6-7-7-20 1.9v 1T. (Don't know if i'll need to change those timings)

I also have the C2 version of the 955. I read up that its much harder to OC this chip than the C3 version.

If you guys need more info about my settings, Lemme know i'll post what I can.

Thanks alot guys for the help!!

maybe, push your fsb up to like 230 and then lower your ram timings and lower your HT multi. keep it at about 2000mhz.

if that gets your chip too hot then you are going to need better cooling, but that cooler is good, so just try it out.

Will do.

What would be good timings?

Well for now, just lower your ram to below normal speeds to give you room, and worry about the chip first. Once you have the chip the way you want, then you tweak the ram.
Isn't the 955 a Black Edition? The whole point of those chips is that they're unlocked, even if it's C2 stepping I'd start by pushing the CPU mult before stressing your whole system with the FSB and having to tinker with everything else. Then if you aren't achieving the numbers you want you can drop it back a bit and try upping the FSB to see if you can't get the last way there. Some of these set ups are very finnicky in weird ways.

For example I can get to 20x200 on air with reasonable volts on my B55 (a crippled 955, but with c3 stepping, so go figure) stable, but if I try something like 19x210 it hard resets. In fact almost any multi on my board above 205FSB results in errors even with downclocked ram.

overclocking with the multi doesn't yield anywhere near the performance gain that the FSB does. I have my stock multi right now. he has a 790FX board, one of boards made to overclock.

Using my laptop now. In the bios if I set my FSB @ 230 I can drop my RAM freq to 1227, or jump to 1533. I chose 1227 @ 6-6-6-18 Timings.

As for my HT link speed I can choose 1840 or 2070. Which one should I choose?

With regard to real world performance, I doubt overclocking through the FSB or Multi would make much difference, especially since he can manually overclock the North Bridge and RAM.

Now if it would cut an hour out of rendering times, then sure, but 3 seconds?
