B55 Overclocking Help??

Thread Starter
I have a Phenom II X2 555 @ 3.2Ghz UNLOCKED to Phenom II X4 B55 @ 3.2Ghz.. I'm using the ASUS M4A89GTD-PRO BIOS 1801.. I can get this thing to overclock anywhere from 3.2-4.2Ghz but being stable i have a few questions about..

- Like what would the safest voltages across CPU, NB, NB/CPU, etc.. ?

- How do i know what to set the HT MHz AT?

- Also how do i know what to set the CPU/NB MHz AT?

I have read some guides on overclocking but the are general statements as there's different CPU/motherboard combinations and so forth.. But I'm looking for is the people with the same setup (CPU/MOBO) to tell me what your results were and what you had to do to get there..

Here are some screenshots of getting is to 4GHz and it booted into win7 64bit but as soon as i hit prime95 open it crashed..

Thanks for all your help ahead of time..

i have the 555 on a msi 790fx-gd70

my max over clock so far is 3955mhz im currently testing in p95 as we speak.

cpu 3955mhz (293x13.5) at 1.43V
nb 2637mhz at 1.2V
ht 2051mhz at stock voltage
dram 1172mhz 7-7-7-20-CR1 at 1.6V

from what i understand you can go to 1.5V on the cpu before you run the risk of cpu degradation. on the nb i wouldnt push past 1.4v unless you have good cooling try to keep the nb at 60c or below. and on the ht i would leave it at stock voltage as close to 2000mhz as possible i usually get the best performance between 1800 and 2100 any less and i get sluggish response and any more i get hyper transport errors. when it comes to the ram increased voltage only shortens the life of you ram. i would stick to stock voltage and crunch your timings at the speed you can get your highest overclock.

if your crashing at 4ghz in p95 try lowering your ram divider and tighten timings also try lowering your ht speed and raising your nb speed. to hit 2.5ghz on the nb you dont need much voltage so i wouldnt worry to much about voltage. you may also want to try raising the fsb a little and lowering the multiplier. my system seems to do amazingly between 250 and 320 fsb unlocked and between 250 and 300 on stock cores.

as for cpu voltages only raise it a little bit at a time. it is time consuming and a little annoying but it pays off in the end. only raise the voltage when you need to.

as far as temps go try to keep your cpu under 62c the cooler the better on the 555 cooling seems to benefit more than voltage. the cooler the cpu the higher the clock with only the voltage necessary to stabilize the cpu.

i hope this helps you out.

I'd say 4ghz is a pretty good overclock. Also recommend you leave all your voltages stock except the CPU, which shouldn't exceed 1.55 24/7.

I don't know about safe voltages. For a real X4 we usually stay below 1.5. HT Link should always be as close to 2000 MHz as possible, any more doesn't give you extra performance. Increasing CPU/NB helps performance, with an actual X4 you can get 2500 MHz-3000 MHz.

I would lower your HT Link to 2000 and your NB Frequency to the next lowest level and retry.

Well a few things, you might not even need 1.5V to hit 4GHz, and since the phenoms seem to hate the heat, you could try dumping it down a bit. I'm currently running my B55 @ 3.8GHz because I'm a little finnicky about overvolting and can run stable at 1.375V, but I did manage to hit 4.2GHz stable at 1.5V, but for some reason I can't make myself come close to degrading my chip. Each chip is different, so while yours might require 1.5V you might be surprised and find slightly lower volts yielding more stability, or not. 1.5V seems to be about the max however.

Not sure why you have your HT set so high, most people say that HT oc's yield very little results, and even those that do recommend usually suggest you stay around 250MHz +- 2000, which could give your rig more stability. Your northbridge is also super high, it can't hurt to check if turning it down yields more stability (sacrificing a little performance for stability is often worthwhile).

The sad truth also is that every B55 will be different, as they are not 955s for a reason, either 1 or 2 cores didn't perform as well as expected, or what have you, so some people will hit higher stable clocks than others.

you get bsod irlq errors and memory management errors and sometimes driver errors when the nb is unstable (at least on my system). if you have c3 stepping your in the same boat as me mine is c3 as well. this morning i hit 4004mhz @1.45V perfectly fine right now im pushing for 4.2ghz
