5850 to 560ti or 570 upgrade? - Page 2

You might want to think twice about going NVIDIA here.

AMD CPUs have trouble maxing out Fermi Based cards.

It would have the same issue with an AMD card of the same power level as a Fermi card. I.E. brands have nothing to do with it.

A single OC'd PHII x4 is good enough for a single 570 or below. It may BN you a bit in some highly CPU-dependent apps/games, but generally speaking it's a good enough chip for the GPU's you're considering.
That sounds better.

I'm coming from a AMD Phenom II X4 955.

It had trouble maxing out both a GTX 460 and GTX 470 in most games.

yea.
i'm refering to x4

AMD CPU/GPU is slow/slow so ur not being bottleneck by any single chip.
if you go AMD/nvidia you'll be going slow/fast and the slow CPU will bottleneck the fast GPU.
best to go intel/nvidia for fast/fast

That's possibly the worst uninformed explanation I've ever heard.

Lol. As far as cards go i would get the GTX560. Not liking the problems GTX570 are having with limited power delivery system.

What games are you having issues maxing out with your current setup? My 5850 has no problems with anything at 1920x1200, so I don't plan on upgrading until next-gen (28nm) in late 2011. There is really no point unless you feel like it's not maxing something specific out.

As for AMD having bad drivers:

1. Install Driver Sweeper
2. Uninstall Catalyst
3. Boot into Safe mode (F8 at boot)
4. Run Driver Sweeper
5. Boot back into Windows
6. Download and install Catalyst 10.5- it's the old standby for when you start getting problems with drivers on single card setups.

If you feel you're still having problems at that point, sell your card and buy a GTX 560.

Unlocking the power limiter isn't necessary and is what killed the cards. The 570 is a good overclocker no need to disable the power limiter just go read the 570 overclock thread. Not getting something because its dangerous to disable a saftey feature is kinda silly.

I have to do this several times a day for my 5850 to keep working up to speed. I get 91 fps in my favorite game and when the drivers decide to flip out I get 13-20 fps in the same game until I...

1. Install Driver Sweeper
2. Uninstall Catalyst
3. Boot into Safe mode (F8 at boot)
4. Run Driver Sweeper
5. Boot back into Windows
6. Download and install Catalyst 10.5

...then I'll be set for a few more hours of uninterrupted gaming. I fresh installed Windows several times thinking that would help, I have never overclocked the 5850 (non-reference version with no voltage control), and my CPU overclock is 24 hour Prime stable so it has to be the driver causing the problem. I'm sure my X6 Phenom @ 3.8Ghz won't bottleneck a 580.....right? That's the first thing I'm buying with some of my tax return $$$
