Sorry for the double post but here are some benches comparing your 5850 to a 570. They haven't added the 560 as yet so there are no benches for a 5850 vs 560 comparison.

if you go AMD/nvidia you'll be going slow/fast and the slow CPU will bottleneck the fast GPU.
best to go intel/nvidia for fast/fast
Lol seriously? The AMD CPUs are indeed slower than the Intel counterparts, but the difference is minuscule and likely not noticeable in anything but CPU benchmarks for single GPU systems.

And in the OPs situation, he'd definitely be fine.

A pretty good upgrade, you should be fine on your PII, all the talk of CPU bottleneck is rubbish because at 3.8 you should be fine. As for AMD drivers, i try to avoid using driver sweeper as it just gives more problems, and i just uninstall using ccc (or the nvidia equivilant) and install new drivers and it always works out. Again i say go for the GTX 570 over the 560, but if you really dont wanna spend GTX 570 money then consider the 560 super overclock. If however you wanna give AMD another shot, the 6950 1GB is also a great price and is faster than the 560 in most cases for about the same price. I've got a 570 and a 6950 and I personally dont think the 570 is worth the extra cash because my 6950 handles games fine, unlocks and is a pretty decent overclocker (though i always game stock).

1. Install Driver Sweeper
2. Uninstall Catalyst
3. Boot into Safe mode (F8 at boot)
4. Run Driver Sweeper
5. Boot back into Windows
6. Download and install Catalyst 10.5

...then I'll be set for a few more hours of uninterrupted gaming. I fresh installed Windows several times thinking that would help, I have never overclocked the 5850 (non-reference version with no voltage control), and my CPU overclock is 24 hour Prime stable so it has to be the driver causing the problem. I'm sure my X6 Phenom @ 3.8Ghz won't bottleneck a 580.....right? That's the first thing I'm buying with some of my tax return $$$
That is the exact problem I have. Thanks for the comparison.
