Mac and PC sharing files on a spare parts FTP server?

Thread Starter
Im planning on building an FTP server out of these spare parts.
Biostar P4m80-43 socket 478
2x1GB Crucial DDR 400 CL3(can't believe its going for $90 for 2GB)
And either a Celeron 2.4Ghz or a P4 2.5Ghz.

I plan to add a few old SATA HDDs when I replace the ones I have now.
But my questions is, is there a format/ program that will allow me (on a PC) and my girlfriend (on a Mac) to exchange files on the server?
Also, I was just planning on making a cheap NAS box and my buddy told me I should just turn it into an FTP server. What exactly is an FTP server and how will it benifit me if I'm just exchanging files from a PC, a Mac, 2 laptops, and an HTPC?

Any help is appreciated.

If you're going to go FTP server or anything of the sort, you can always install Debian and use SAMBA shares.

Quick. Easy. And [almost] painless.
