$2000 2.1 Audio Build Suggestions?

Thread Starter
I've set a budget of around $2000.

I like a large range of music 60% Electronic (including DnB) / 20% Rock / 10% Jazz / 10% Classical.

This is what I'm looking at currently:
Asus Xonar Essence STX
Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1 Monitor Loudspeakers
HSU Research VTF-1 10" subwoofer
Purchased: Virtue Audio M451 /w 24v/65w Power Supply
To Purchase: 30v/10a Dynamic Power Antek Linear Supply

I will also make decent use of my Sennheiser HD 650 cans on the PC the sound card will be in, it will need to provide for the cans needs too.

Any Alternate suggestions for Sound Card / DAC need to be external or PCIE. I have a HT Omega Claro Halo that has served me for a long time, but it is PCI, and it is going to have to go up for sale.

Suggestions?

Looks pretty good. Though I havent heard much about the CX5, it's supposed to be a lot like the BX5a with extra features you can adjust based on your room. It should be good if you dont want to spend too much time on setting up room acoustics.

Keep the Claro Halo. It is as good as the STX plus drives HD650s wonderfully. It also has a decent DAC chip to feed a speaker amp.
Speakers: Usher Audio S-520
Subwoofer: HSU Research STF-1
Amp: Virtue Audio ONE.2

I'd suggest getting the 30v/130w psu upgrade for the amp not because the speakers need the extra power, but because the 30v sounds much better. However, it will put you a bit over budget.

Agreed, but the Halo is PCI, and my new build will have both PCI slots covered. I could have bought a different motherboard, but I'd still eventually have to get rid of the PCI card.

Fair enough. I still suggest what I linked above, just use the STX instead of the Halo.

I've just spent a good while reading specifications, and reviews for what you suggested. I really like the amp, and the component speakers you suggested. I may be going that direction.

I'm having trouble though with expecting proper constant low end base response expected from much of electronic from an 8" sub. I have always felt that 10" gave that proper mix of low end capability and tightness of bass. Do you feel that the HSU STF-1 will meet the demands of electronic music, including a decent amount of drum and bass?

Thanks for your suggestions thus far.

The STF-1 will do the job but naturally won't go as low as a 10" or 12". Finding a quality 10" without adding on another $100 or so will be tough. If you can stretch the budget look at the STF-2 by HSU. This Emotive is another good option that is a bit less expensive and has free shipping. Beyond that you'll probably have to look at bigger names like Klipsch or Polk Audio to find something in your budget. The main problem with big names is that build quality of the boxes goes down sharply compared to smaller brands. Better built sub boxes = Tighter, cleaner bass.

If you are into DIY a great option would be this driver paired with this plate amp.

I had been looking at the STF-2 before you mentioned it. I think I like that as an option.

Well the budget that I came up with was kind of arbitrary. Let me ask you this: What would you do for my situation with a $2000 budget?

Building my own enclosure for the driver is not something I'd likely enjoy, and thus I wouldn't really be motivated to do the research in order be able to do it right the first time. What I want is powerful, tight, and accurate sound representation.

The space it is in is large, and acoustically retarded. I'd say about 20x20, but certainly not square.
