$2000 2.1 Audio Build Suggestions? - Page 4

SlyFox brings up a good point. The sealed box will give you more flexibility with placement due to the fact that you don't have to worry about the ports being too close to a wall. On the other hand if your living conditions ever change and you have to lose the sub, Sierras will be favorable.

Out of curiosity, where are these going to be placed? On a desk, stands? Also, would towers be possible?

Living conditions aren't likely to change, we just bought the home. I have a rather large U-shaped desk, that I'd be placing them on. I'm pretty sure I would make mini stands for them. I could technically use towers, but it would make the room look very ackward, and making staging annoying.

The ports wouldn't be within 4 feet of a wall.

I was under the impression this was not for a computer. Why not take a look at the endless number of studio monitor options? That's where I went and couldn't be happier for a nearfield setup. As a bonus I reclaimed the desk space my amp occupied...

That's actually where I started out. I had thought to go with some M-Audio active monitors. Desk space is the last thing I am concerned with. If I'm lucky, an amp would become an nice eye piece for the desk.

I'm concerned with superior sound first, and everything else second. I also like the idea of not having active monitors better. I then have the option to upgrade either or without Frankensteining everything.

Obviously there are some very high end monitors if you want quality... superior sound is touchy, IMO you can do either way and go as high-end as you could ever want. I was also on the same page regarding active monitors but after a year of trying to decide where to put my cash I changed. Ended up simplifying things by not having to match an amplifier.

Just want you to consider all the options. Quality is the last thing you have to worry about. What you like to listen to is another story... haha

EDIT: I actually would have chosen the A7X's had my wallet been a little fatter. I really loved listening to them but couldn't afford it That tweeter does wonders. Clearly your budget is much higher. They (that series) are seriously worth a listen before you make a purchase.

Yes, I very much would like to be able to listen before making a purchase, but I don't really have any nearby options for that.

Congrats on the house! Sounds like the Sierra-1s will be perfect then.

One other thing I was thinking you might benefit from is going with a Servo Sub instead. Since you mentioned Electronic will be the majority of your listening the extra speed, resolution and lack of distortion will be really beneficial. You can find them built by Outofthewoods here. He said the promo price is $700 which I'm guessing doesn't include shipping seeing as how the plate amp and driver are $500 alone. It would be pretty much the top of the line subwoofer without diminishing returns severely kicking in.

Again, it will be pushing your budget but I mentioned it because it is what I would do personally. Even though I don't listen to much Electronic music, if I had your budget for 2.1 I'd go with the servo sub hands down.

You might be able to save some money by emailing Ascend Acoustics and asking if they have any refurbished Sierra-1s in stock. They regularly have sales on them so I'm thinking they might have a few refurbs, but not enough to put on their site.

Edit: Whoops, I missed the part that said "$700 per cabinet" I guess that means $1200 + shipping for the sub

Ouch, but that is a very nice looking setup. Thanks on the house, it's just awesome, built in man cave and all. I actually already looked at their website, and they have b-stock listed there. I think they were about $70-80 cheaper. I'd rather just purchase the new ones and get them in a finish I like.

Maybe the servo will be in my future.

Found a used Virtue Audio M451 and bought it. I still plan on buying the linear power supply for it.
