Do you own a refurb? If you do, check the keyboard!!!

Soo... My Z key was sticking, when I pressed it down it wouldn't pop up again. So I decided to pop the key off and see if re-seating the switch would solve the problem, *pops off the key hmm... Quite a bit of dust in there*.

Lets pop off some more keys to see if its worth cleaning the whole thing.

EWW!
p1140014g.jpg

Lets take a closer look, You can't see the Pubes. Yes you read that right HUMAN PUBIC HAIRS! I Vacuumed those immediately!

p1140016a.jpg

Lets zoom out a little. Something that looks like peanut skin (above right ALT) Red hair, Blonde hair... CAT HAIR?

p1140017.jpg

After multiple passes with the vacuum. Time to break out the Q-Tips Isopropyl alcohol and tweezers.

p1140026z.jpg

Almost there.

p1140028y.jpg

All done, Nice and shiny biggrin.gif 1 or 2 hairs in between layers (I think they're from the worker who assembled it in the factory) but I didn't have a screw driver small enough to take it apart.

p1140064.jpg

Time Taken: 4 hours.

Result: Clean keyboard plate and a 2c drop in temps.

I thought that since this was a business refurb it would be physically clean. I also thought refurbs came from corporate fleets or IT depts... Looks like this one came from a adult film studio that produces "My Sexy Cat Owning Boss".

Next time I go shopping for a refurb I'm bringing a UV light.

Wow I hope you got a good deal on that. Thanks for the heads up. I had thought about going with a refurb, but I had been worried about this very thing. Glad you got it all sorted out.

It was a good deal. I still think refurbs are good deals, just pop off a few keys in the store to check. What I do when I'm looking for a refurb.

1. Check the screen for scratches, excessive backlight bleeding, areas that are darker than others.

2. Turn it on to check the HDD, if it starts clicking, chances are it'll crash sooner, rather than later.

3. Inspect the ports. Especially the USB ports. (One of the local shops got a truckload of WorstBuy laptops. Brought one home and there was lots of resistance plugging my mouse in, turns out the port was coated in grit *like it fell in a mud puddle*).

4. Bring a USB drive with Hardware Inspection tools. Most sales reps have no idea what is actually in the laptop. Case in point:

Me: what GPU does the have?

Rep: GPU?

Me: *mental eye roll* Graphics Card.

Rep: Ooh, Intel.

Me: What model?

Rep: HD.

Me: OK... Which model exactly? X4500, X4500MHD or the new GMA HD?

Rep: Umm... These just came in today, I haven't had a chance to check them out.

Me: *liar I saw these in the Flyer a week ago* OK, is there someone here That knows what the model is?

Use Something simple like Speccy For a Overview of the System and a HDD Utility that shows POH (power on hours) It's not a refurb if the HDD has been on over 5 weeks.

I've bought dozens of refurbs for people and have only had 1 or 2 bad experiences. Is that going to stop me from picking up a refurb for myself If I see a good deal? No, They're good as long as you know what your getting and have reasonable expectations as to what its capable of.

There are 2 types of refurbs:
1: Manufacturer refurbished where the device did not pass examination and was repaired but they have to sell it as refurbished
2: reconditioned refurbished when all they do is fix whatever is broken and its good to go

Every time I've ordered a "refurbished" laptop it's been brand new.
