Crossfire/sli SandyBridge

im getting the gigabyte p67 ud7 board..

im just wondering if the 2x 6970s i have are able to work on the bottom 2 pci-e lanes. (there are 4x pci-e 2 lanes)
if i use the top 2 i will lose a lane (the 2nd one) which means im left with 3x lanes.
if i use the bottom 2 lanes i will still have access to the top 2 lanes.

For i need the top 2 for a ocz Revodrive and a Soundcard.
Thanks in advance

You should probably wait until April when the new revision of the chipset comes out, you know seeing as how it's defective and about half the retailers have stopped selling p67 boards.

/Assumption
If you use the third and fourth (from the top) pci-e slots you will have 1 card at x16 and the other at x8. With enthusiest motherboards they assume that you will buy high end (dual slot) graphics cards. So usually the first and third pci-e slot (from the top) are both x16 and the others are x8.

So I'd install the cards in the first and third pci-e slots to get the full width of the x16 buses.
That is a sexy mobo by the way.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

UD7 has a nForce 200 multiplexer (although that does not actually add lanes to the CPU).

This picture should help:

Note the first PCI-e x4 slot is not actually useable because of the adjacent heatsink blocking it.

Thanks for the replies.
im aware of the NF200 chip thats onboard but does it mean that only 1 & 3 are NF200 operational?
The NF200 chip does add extra lanes to the cpu except its via the chip itself not directly from the pci-e sockets.

I did watch a review on the Maximus 4 extreme p67 motherboard where the Reviewer had to use the last 2 pci-e lanes. the reason he gave was because of the NF200.

Ah well i guess i have to trial and error myself. If all goes to *****. i have a

the nf 200 will create 2 x16 lanes on slots 2 and 4, when slots 3 and 6 are filled then it switches the x16 lanes to x8 and diverts the remaining 16 lanes to slots 3 and 6.
so if you have anything anywhere other than slots 2 and 4 you will be forced to use x8 slots.

Does that mean even if i have the 6970's in slots 2 & 4 and end up using the sound card in slot 6, the 16x 16x become 8x 8x ?

+rep to all that helped with explaining. ty

Here is a better diagram:

Gigabyte has chose to use the NF200 to connect all the PCIe slots to the CPU in this manner. The x8 slots are connected to a switch, which are then connected to the x16 slot. Finally they connect to the NF200 and then the CPU.

Asus uses a different method on the Maximus 4 Extreme.

I am not sure if it makes a difference though.
