Oh lawd another "Graphics are hitting a plateau..." blah blah. Until our games look like LoTR or 90% of the movies out there(given that most movies are filmed on green screen anymore) we are FAAAAAARRRRR from a wall.



Until my games have this sort of fidelity, we are not at a plateau. If it can be done for film, it can and will eventually be done for games.

all the technology is there. it all depends on how much the devs are willing to spend on game graphics. For movies of course it will be better texures, cgi, etc. thats because they have a larger budget and for movies eyecandy adds to the experience.

Maybe. But I don't play games for realism, I play them for fun. If they happen to be realistic at the same time then that's just all the better.

IMO "big steps" just create developer 'fads' , and small steps end up working out better. Just like how when we took a big step in graphics capabilities (when GPU architecture switched from pixel pipelines and TMUs to multipurpose cores) the industry suddenly concentrated way too much on graphics and other "media" aspects of it (artwork, voice acting, movement capturing, etc) and too little on gameplay itself.

Crap! I was expecting an in-depth article. That was kind of a let down. Other than that, I think they should start looking into how to make it more real.

Kinect and Move, while decent starting points, are complete gimmicks. Most people don't want to exercise while playing a game, playing a game is supposed to be a relaxing thing. A better way to move would be to make new ways of controlling. Not motion sensitive but things like neural interfaces or body controllers.

Sure motion sensors could be a cool path to take, but until we get something along the lines of the Holo-deck then it wont be anything more than a gimmick.
