Looking for a beast headphone/sound card setup!

Thread Starter
Fellow audiophiles, I need your help.
I'm looking for pretty much the best sounding bang for buck headphone/sound card setup. Hoping you guys can throw me a number of suggestions. Budget will be around $300. I was looking at the Xonar Essence STX paired with a set of HD 555's, which looks very good to me but I only know so much about audio hardware.
Basically, I want something that will give me years of enjoyment to my music. Surround sound support for games, movies and such is also a plus.
So yeah if you guys can throw me a bunch of suggestions that would be very appreciated. biggrin.gif

Recently bought the Xonar Essence STX and the Beyerdynamics DT990-250Ohms off of Amazon. I got the DT990's used for 150 USD plus the Xonar for 190, so that's a little more than your budget. The DT990's have great bass and a good soundstage. The mid's are recessed and there is some trebble shrill but that might change with some burn in. Overall I like the headphones and they are very comfortable.

EDIT:
Good review of headphones for gaming on www.head-fi.org
