Intel i7 950 3.06Mhz OC question

Thread Starter
I'm new to overclocking CPU. I'm using the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. Without adding any voltage how high can I take my 'Host Clock Frequency' to run stable 24/7 without worrying about heat or reapplying thermal paste?

I just want some OC while still being in the safe zone. Do I have to tweak the 'Core Voltage' as well? I'd rather not because of heat.

I have HT turned enabled with Turbo Boost Technology enabled as well.

Non Turbo Boost CPU Speed is default to 3.06 currently running at 3.22Ghz.

Turbo Boost CPU Speed default is 3.33 currently running at 3.50Ghz.

I'm assuming I go by what the non turbo boost speed is? My core voltage default is set at 1.30000 V right now. Host clock frequency from 133.00 Mhz clocked to 140.00Mhz.

Any help or answers would be great. Any advice greatly appreciated.

disable c1e suppport, speedstep, and cpu tm function

from there you can overclock. also 1.3v is a little high so try to start at 1.25v and move up from there.

1.3V is too high for a merely 140 BLCK

Turn off all the above said features and Turbo.

Try 23 multiplier and 165 BLCK with 1.25 and work from there.

Thank you I will give that a read tommorow. So far I've stepped it up....

Non Turbo Boost CPU Speed is default to 3.06 currently running at 3.40Ghz.

Turbo Boost CPU Speed default is 3.33 currently running at 3.70Ghz.

After running a stress test and passing. I think I'm not going to touch it any further until I do more homework and read up.

Thanks guys.

Go through the guide. If your aiming for 4GHz you'll probably have switch off Turbo Boost. Familarise yourself with your motherboard bios and get used to the terms used. Then remember to watch cpu temps and memory uncore and QPI multipliers.

Have fun biggrin.gif

I used Intel Extreme Tuning Utility 2.0 and just went up on the software 'Host Clock Frequency'.

My idle cpu temps are:
CPU Core #1 39C
CPU Core #2 34C
CPU Core #3 37C
CPU Core #4 35C

I didn't do anything else. Currently still reading that i7 Overclocking Guide. Thanks Yermother.

Ok I've disabled Speed Step - kept Turbo Boost Technology enabled.
Lowered my default core voltage from 1.30000 to 1.28750v.
Highered my IOH voltage from 1.00v to 1.20v.
Highered Host Clock Frequency from 133.00 to 165.00Mhz.

Ran stress test in Intel Extreme Tuning Utility 2.0 and passed.

My result is 3.80Ghz Non-Turbo Boost CPU Speed / 4.13Ghz Max Turbo Boost CPU Speed.

Ran OCCT tests. Highest CPU temp was 70C at 100% CPU usage. ALL tests completed without errors. At idle CPU core 1 is 40C other three between 34-35C. Getting 23% gains on my CPU.

Curious what other overclockers think on these temps? IF I did anything wrong or could do better?

Also is this a safe OC 24/7?
