Crossfire Temp Issues

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
Dear overclock.net,

'sup? A couple of days ago I purchased a 2nd Sapphire Vapor-X 5870.

That is all very nice, but my temps are shooting through the roof! Also, MSI Afterburner showed me that there is a BIOS version difference between the two GPUs. Pics after the specs:

* Case: HAF932 w/ 1 additional bottom fan
* CPU: Intel i7 930 clocked at 3.2
* CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14
* Mobo: Asus P6X58D Premium
* RAM: 3x2GB Corsair Dominators
* PSU: Corsair HX850
* GPU: 2x Sapphire Vapor-X 5870 OC
* DEMCIFlex filters on the side, front, and bottom fan intakes.

Pics on idle

**Note that GPU1 is a full 30 degrees higher than GPU2!**

This was all without gaming. Just fired Just Cause 2, and check it out - I was hitting 85C, and I can hear the fans through my headphones

What are my options here?

you have to expect that tho, you have pretty much no space between the cards so the top one has little air. and having crossfire on its own adds bout 10*c

I'm not saying I didn't expect it... This is, however, my first Crossfire setup, and I didn't realize the top card would have so little room to breath.

I'm not looking to whine, though - I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to improve the situation.

Due to the layout of the board, nothing you can do other than improve airflow.

I always make sure to purchase a board that has 2 slots available for spacing.

EDIT> Does one card run cooler than the other when installed solo?
Also a voltage tweak might drop the temps to a more acceptable level, provided your cards support voltage adjustments.

What proper spacing gets you.

you know man, this really sucks, i had the same problem running sli, no room between the cards.But then again, the damn cards these days are SO freaking hot.

I mean when I spend good money for two 480gtx's I expect them to just work out of the box without any further cooling or noise issues without having to spend a $1000 on a proper water cooling system.

Maybe its time they stop with who has the fastest card and focus on a Stable, cooled and noise free build. Because if this is how its gona be then they better include a custom water cooling kit with their cards, ( I will gladly pay an extra $100 or $200

[end rant]

A proper water cooling system with 2x GTX480s costs about 400USD. a CPU only loop costs 200USD.

Not 1000

I'm curious - if I move the 2nd GPU to the 3rd PCI slot, and have it running at 16x / 8x, what will the performance hit look like?

EDIT:

Also, would you recommend the P6TD as a good replacement board? Yeah, I lose USB3 and SATA6, but I don't think I'll be needing either of these soon... am I going to miss anything else, and is the spacing good?

Neglible, not even noticeable in gameplay, synthetics will show a difference, 1-2%.

I was going to suggest that, but it looked like the bottom mount psu wouldn't allow it.

performance difference is TINY! i would move the 2nd card down, should make a bit of a difference and if you have that giant side door fan on, that will help

Well, I tried moving the GPU down a slot. I had to remove the brace the PSU stood on, not have it mounted with any screws, and on top of that I get minimum clearance between the 2nd GPU and the PSU (not much different than what I had between the 1st and 2nd GPU to start with).

Grunion (or anybody else), you seem like you know your motherboard spacing - do you think the P6TD Deluxe would be a good replacement board?
