Those are probably min specs for DX9 mode. Some games just utilize system hardware better. Look at Dead Space 2 for example, my rig isn't even that strong and on max settings AA enable at 1920x1080 i get 70fps avg.
Glad to see the new CryEngine is more efficient!!

Minimum for Crysis 1 was 6800, I ran it on a 6800GS and got barely playable settings on low @ 1024x768.

Crysis 1 real minimum requirement in terms of VGA was to support SM2.0 I think... so in theory a Radeon 9700pro could probably run the game at low settings 800x600 with some 20fps I think,

I'm quite sure Crysis 2 will run on the lower settings in something much slower than a 8800GT, the only minimum requirement will be SM3.0 (dx9c), I guess a 8800GT will run the game with smooth framerate at medium+ settings,

but we will see,

I doubt that, my 6800GS barely ran the game at all smoothly, I'd think it'd be the same for this on an 8800GT unless they decided to change how they rate minimum specs.

well, things are quite different now, a 6800GS is something from 2004/2005, before the current consoles were released, and Crysis was a PC only game, from 2004 to 2006 the jump was quite huge with the 8800GTX, now while the new VGAs are constantly improving (but to be honest from 2006 to 2009 it was quite disappointing) the industry is overall quite limited by the 2005/2006 "dx9" consoles, and Crysis 2 will run on these machines to... so I think there will be plenty of options to scale the graphics to a level were a "8600GT" will run the game quite OK (at low res)

on youtube you can find some 9800pro (from 2003) owners claiming Crysis can run at around 30fps on low details on that card

It makes sense but at the same time it makes none. There's no way a card such as the 8800GT will be on the same level as the 6800 series card was in the original Crysis. By that logic the GTX 480 would struggle to play the game at decent settings at more modern resolutions. They've already came out and admitted that current hardware is well sufficient for playing the game here. Here's what was said:

Quote:
This isn’t necessarily a game you can’t play today, or where you need another two years to max it out. That’s not the approach this time. Now, it’s more like we want to give you the best PC experience with current high-end equipment. So if you bought the last high-end graphics card, you’re going to get a blast out of it. Likewise, the minimum-spec experience will be of a far higher quality than Crysis was.
