Very specific 580 OC Questions.

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I bought a 580 a couple of days ago and am very keen to get my waterblock on and OC the hell out of it HOWEVER:

1) I've heard a million nightmare stories about people bricking their 580's and 570's using furmark after disabling the power limiter, so i dont want to do that after voiding my warranty with a waterblock. I have also read the limiter is software based and only affects furmark and OCCT , so

what should i use to stress test my card during overclocking?

I need something that isnt high powered enough to brick the card, but is stressful enough to spot artifacts and crash quickly. How good is folding for this? it loads at 98% and gets it to 74'c even though stalker COP will get it to 99% and about 79'c.

2) what are the safe voltages and temps for the card?

I know this is straightforward, but i'm fairly new to nvidia OCing so i have no idea on this front.

---------

As is probably obvious, i dont often have £450 to spend on graphics cards, so any advice to prevent me bricking this card will be rewarded with +REP.

Generaly I use Unigine Heaven 2.1 to stress my card because it puts it through various stages rather than repeating the same type of stress all the time. Not sure about temps and voltages though.

If you're that worried. Go set an overclock setting, run heaven benchmark on max settings at the highest resolution you can. If you pass that without artifacting, you should be stable for gaming.

But that's just me

Use Crysis benchmark tool or Crysis Warhead tool for at least 30runs with maxed out graphic settings..

Also add 3DMark 11 and Unigine Heaven 2.1 in the mix..

CHEERS..

Play some demanding games like crysis. Play through some levels and if it doesn't crash within 2 hours, its stable. If you really want to be sure, play through the whole game

Cheers guys, you're all +REP'd.

Seems like the consensus was using Heaven, which i probably will do, maybe toss a 3D mark in if heaven isnt behaving itself. But i'll play a good 2+ hour of Stalker COP to make sure and will leave it to fold over night just to be double sure.

I'm about to take the plunge and stick the waterblock on, fingers crossed...

Be very careful with the screws, if you don't have a torx t6, you should get one.
As others have said, some heaven runs + some time on the games you play regularly is the best stress test, just watch for artifacts. As long as you stay within the voltage allowed by Afterburner you should have no issues.
Good luck & have fun overclocking that beast when done!

Cheers FTW,

I made sure i had a T6 in my toolkit, came off with no major hiccups or thread stripping.

The bad news is, metro 2033 crashed a couple times within 20 minutes then i got a BSOD, I felt the sinks i put on the VRMs and mosfets and they were scorching hot. That said, i'm pretty sure VRMs would run hotter than 60'c (the point at which it burns your fingers) so i braved some stalker, which ran fine for over an hour, despite causing a higher power draw in GPUz. I'll still definitely be getting some higher quality heatsinks though.
