I have a silverstone kublai 2, custom modded with..2x 120mm front intakes 1x 120mm side intake blowing on the cards, 1x rear exhaust 2x top exhaust's.. all fans are speed and switch controlled so I can turn them off or lower the sound down when on idle. But as i said the case is very decent with all my cable ninja done and my 260GTX runs very cool so did every other card before it. its just as soon as I tried Fermi. Even with the case side open Just outputs too much noise and runs too hot i am afraid.

Dont know how well they work closely together though.
I have a galaxy 1GB GC version, the blue detachable fan one, tried running it with my 260GTX, the 460GTX gets way hotter then the 480GTX when put next to another card.

Im still up for the VF3000F since the overclocks you can get with that are much worth the money and at 65% fan speed, it cools my card down to the 50s in Bad Company 2.
So your options are pretty limited:
1)Aftermarket GPU cooler
2)Gtx 560, 570, 580

Price/Performance goes to the coolers IMO.
agreed, 580 GTX haven't hit the mainstream market here and seems to be selling for $ 900 - $1200 NZD online.. we have some 570GTX 's going for close to $700NZD

how about the ATi's side? do they have any cards that can out perform 480GTX or 580GTX and still run much cooler and quite? I have heard nothing but bad stories about the ATi 5000 series

EDIT
question though, will the VF3000F perform any better in SLi then the stock hamster cage fans? I can imagine the top card wont have much to breath since they about 1Cm apart? Much like how my 460GTX suffocates, in this case aren't hamster cage fans better when you have less space and it comes down to SLi or Xfire?

Well the 5970 and 6970 would be what you are looking at. They are noisy and not exactly the definition of cool and quiet though. Personally not a fan of ATi/AMD after returning a brand new 5970 the day I got it for a GTX 480 and I dont regret it a bit at all. So we are still at aftermarket cooler vs GTX 500.

My 5850 is quiet and cool, but it's only just on par with a GTX460. I don't know much about the 69xx series, but ATI/AMD cards have traditionally been cooler than their Nvidia rivals.

i am not a big fan of ATi/AMD myself.. and the 5970 or 6970 means nothing if they aren't any cooler and run very quite then my 480GTX, I have seen many folks trying to sell / tradein their 5970's and 6950's here for the 480GTX...

anyone in here using the Geforce 500 series cards(specially the 570GTX and 580GTX?) and can vouch for them / how cool they run and the noise level?

(the only change I see is the new vapor chamber cooler and a bit more beefier with a few more cuda cores. I am actually afraid if its just the revised fermi and I end up running into the same heating issues. )

yes, I know they usually run much cooler/use less power,
I actually had a gigabyte 5850 that went kapoot, before I bought the 460GTX and before that I had a couple 4850's...

what would be the coolest card available from ATi/AMD atm?

and are there any future cards coming in a couple of months that will change the world, or in other words, completely new architecture and run very cool and very quite? I know this may sound irritating to all of you but I just cant stand the noise anymore after my fan goes past 70%...

If you're not happy w/ the heat/noise of a GTX 460, you definitely won't be happy w/ the 580/570. I hope this is a typo and you meant to write 470 instead.

If so, you might want to look at GTX 560s, performance wise it'll be a step down from the 480, but after overclock you probably won't be able to tell by looking at the screen.

Get one with an aftermarket cooler like the MSI Twin Frozr or the Gigabyte SOC, but make sure there is at least one slot in between the 2 cards. The dual fan design doesn't work well at all when there's another card right underneath it.

I meant 460 GTX indeed, its from galaxy, and has a fan in the center which performs poorly in terms of cooling when another card is placed next to it. in this case my 260GTX for physx which would cause it to overheat running furmark in 30seconds)

But I have put the 260GTX next to my 480GTX, and the top card doesn't overheat in furmark with the fan bumped upto 90%.

I always knew it, a gut feeling, that hamster fans perform much better in SLi / or when two cards are places together. So buying an aftermarket cooler wont be a fix.

My motherboard has 3 PCI E slots, 16X, 16x ,4 x. So dual slot cards only have about 1CM clearance unless I use 16X and 4X slots, thats why I dont overclock my cards and stick to hamster fans ..

Now Only if the cards / GPU ran much cooler so the hamster fans wouldn't have to make so much noise

I know you said you don't want use water cooling but that really is your answer. I had Sli GTX280's and hated the noise they put out. When the 400 series was suppose to be even louder! I knew I wouldn't have a choice if I wanted to play my games and I'm very happy with the results. My SLI 470 rig now very close to completely silent (Compared to before WC it is silent!). It's easier than you think and a lot of fun too.

But to answer your question without the option of water cooling, the GTX500 series puts out less fan noise than my GTX280's did. I have never owned ATI so I can't comment on that except I've read the best cards are loud too.

I know bro, WC is probably the only solution left now. I just wish the best cards were quite too..you know most of us after buying a pair of high end cards would nor expect to spend more $$ getting it up and running..

.I havent WC a pc since 2003/2004 back in the P4 days..

Can you suggest a WC loop/ setup for only the GPUs? 480GTX or 580GTX ? A Rad, a Pump, and two fermi blocks eh? are there any "kits"that would save me time hunting down parts and be "easy' on me..

I might just sell my 480GTX's while they are still going for good $$ and just get a 580GTX or just discard the SLi, sell one of them and buy a WC and use my 260 as a physx card.
