But it's obvious that some guys are just gonna floor it because they think they can do that 200pts drift with a volkswagen polo :\\
Clutch in games doesn't replicate a real life clutch pedal at all though. You cannot feel the friction point in a game, which is a huge part of knowing how to drive a manual transmission. As for shifting, sure, the game can make someone aware of where the location of the gears are.

We must all be naturals in Europe then. The only people here who drive automatics are (to be polite) a few sandwiches short of a picnic. It's almost impossible to buy an automatic in the UK, and if you pass your test in an automatic you're not allowed to drive a manual. Don't know how US citizens get on with hiring cars over here? Maybe that's where all the automatics go.

That's exactly what I was thinking. When I started driving I'd never played a computer game, not even sonic. I didn't get into all stuff untill years after (seems like another lifetime, or at least a time when I had a life LOL). But when I was a teen and in my early-mid twenties I used ride a motor bike and drive like a lunatic, like there was no tomorrow. I really don't know how i'm still here. It's just a part of being young, it's an old cliche, but you think you're indestructable.

I was going to ask if and how does a toy steering wheel and pedals (link: I can buy a second hand car for that!) replicate clutch control, how does it replicate the biting point. But you've answered for me, it doesn't.

As for learninig where gears are and how to change gear and when, well, that all takes about 10 minutes in a real car, it's not difficult. After a week you don't even realise you're doing it. The skill of driving a real car, on real roads, is having road sense, reading other peoples moves, reading the road, knowing the rules etc

Hehehe... we have quite bad drivers here. I'm aware that nearly everything in Europe is manual, even women drive them. I DARE you to ask a random woman in the US to drive your manual car. Short of my wife and very few others, you'll have a hard time finding one that can.

Learning where the gears are and to actually shift gears while driving can be extremely hard for some. I don't know anyone who's actually used the manual gears on my wheel yet, besides me. My sister tried (she's 12) and she didn't know when to change them. She'd literally keep going in 2nd gear and instead of shifting, she'd complain that the car was slow

And yes, it's insane that you can get a driver's license in the US without even trying manual gears. Automatic gears are a luxury over here, really.

"I'm aware that nearly everything in Europe is manual, even women drive them" PMSL! I DARE you to say that to an English woman!!!

I wasn't implying that us drivers are bad or retarded for not using gears, if that's pretty much all you have, that's what you drive, that's fair enough.

Not sure if you're talking about a real car with the gear change on the stearing wheel, or a racing wheel for games?

If your 12yr old sister can't operate gears, maybe that would go some way to explain why you have to be 17 here to learn to drive?

To be honest, I never play racing games, can't stand them, NONE of them are anything like real life, you can't feel the car sliding, you can't feel the excelleration, you can't feel the body rolling or the geforce, you don't experience that panic as you see your life flashing before your eyes as you do a 360° heading for a brick wall, you don't feel the paranoia of seeing a police car when you know you've drunk too much mouth wash and most of all, i'm rubbish at them! LOL

Manual gearboxes make cars fun. I don't know anyone that has an automatic (I used to though and got rid of it asap!).

Well, I was talking for games, but I didn't mean that the gear change was on the wheel, just for the wheel.
But I still remember using the H-shifter when I played some arcade racers at a birthday party when I was her age. You know, those huge, ugly arcade machines with "racing seats" and the ability to race against your friend playing on the machine next to you. It was a lot of fun back then, probably still would be today. And it wasn't difficult at all to use the H-shifter despite my age. And my sister has no idea that she even has to shift gears, even after being told to do just that.

I don't believe it has anything to do with age, it just comes naturally to some and others have to learn it. And some never learn it, no matter how much they try.

I learnt to change gears on a motor bike, 1 down 4 up, clutch on the handle bars, driving a car was childs play after that.

For the record I do own a manual car. (Civic Si) But ok, I guess women over there aren't stick lovers either.

No, that's not what I meant.

"even women drive them", if you said that to an English woman, you'd be walking around with a very squeaky voice!
