I'm with Quinn Direct. They're kind-of dodgey but cheap. As soon as you get your policy letter the first thing you should do is photocopy it and keep a copy in the car. Keep the original in a safe place.

What's more important than having a clean record is having a no-claims bonus. Sadly, they aren't the same thing. £1900 a year sounds about right for a 19 year old with 0 years no claims.

Here's a tip:

Never, never, never, ever reinsure your car with the same company as the previous year without shopping around first. Always check sites such as compare the market, they get discounts for selling bulk polices. One year I went with X company (can't remember who they were) when I got my renewal the following year it was say £160, I looked on one those comparison sites and the exact same company was like £30 cheaper!?

Insurance companies are a massive rip off, shop around.

Admiral do a quite nice no claims deal. You insure for 10 months but get a recognised 1 year no claims. Also, don't be fooled by Direct Line's no claims discount for named drivers. That is a con and is recognised by no one but Direct Line. You must be the main driver to earn it.

If you really, really want to cut the cost, get a black box installed. That takes off a massive chunk I hear. Just be aware that if you want valid insurance with a black box, you have to drive like a granny

Tons of top drivers started with gokarting. There are games that try to be realistic, like Codemasters stuff, CMRally/Dirt. Stuff like NFS, Blur, Split/Second are just fun. Learning how to take lines is pretty much universal to all driving games but feeling revs for shift cues and just overall feedback is always lacking. Games are mostly one way, can't feel the car or the road just send the polygons around the track.

If you live in Swindon, that may be different.
Yeah, I did hear that it has inflated a lot recently but yeah, still, very expensive. I live in Upper Stratton and it's not that bad buy still still going to be more risky than Basset!

Still looking around and waiting on a few quotes but not expecting anything much cheaper. Just have to bite the bullet I guess and hop on.

I agree with you but there are games that offer that sort of feedback. I play LFS quite a lot with a G27 and you can feel the car losing grip, the different road surfaces and when the car starts to slide, all via the wheel.

Yeah Admiral were my first choice for that very reason, sadly they were about £40 a month more than Quinn. It would have probably paid for itself though.

I always use market comparison sites, because i don't know any other way. In all honesty i think drivers under 21 only have themselves to blame for such high insurance. The way some of us drive.

Heh, i'm not even in Bassett. I live in the countryside

It's not insured drivers that push up prices, it's uninsured drivers that drive stupid that cost everyone.

Well, when I started driving you had to look in the phone book and call as many companies as you could be bothered to, it was a pita. So much easier now.

It's not just the age, some of it is to do with the whole "no win no fee" culture we have now, got a slight tiny pain in your neck? - claim for whiplash. The money has to come from somewhere, unfortunately it comes from our premiums. Insurance companies are like casinos, they never make a loss in the end.

When I was 17 it cost me £800 to insure a 550cc motor bike, but that was 20 years ago! God knows how much it would be now.

It's lucky that they are starting to shut down and really monitor personal injury companies now. Those and debt management companies.

I checked. For a 20 year old living in my area with 0 years no claims it would be £750 a year. So much cheaper than a car.

Forgot to mention, that was for a 100cc Kawasaki Ninja too.
