Suggestions for a final upgrade?

You can see my system below. This build has been VERY poorly done because I couldn't just make the commitment and spend 800 bucks starting from scratch. So I start with the GT240 because my CPU was a pc of crap. Then I upgrade the CPU to something I bought from EBAY (from X2 4200+ to X3 8450)
Then I replace the MOBO because I can't ht past 1000mhz. But, uh-oh, my CPU is AM2+ so I can't buy a newer mobo with AM3 socket, DDR3 Ram etc. etc.

So. I'm stuck with what I've got. I have 220 bucks left to spend on an upgrade.

I was thinking of upgrading to a Phenom II X4 965, but then I saw a 5770GPU for sale (used) for 80 bucks. Any suggestions on where I go from here?

(I will eventually install a bluray player for playback on my TV. I do some light gaming - I'd eventually like to get COD black ops...)

To start with, get rid of some of your ram. Assume you are running 3x2? This is single channel in an amd rig. Better to go with 2x2.

Secondly, if you have $220, I would try to get the used GPU and this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.593267 $143 shipped. The 925 is a 95W C3 phenomII

I know this is $3 over your budget, but would be well worth it.

Also, don't put a 125W 965 on a 4+1 power phase mobo unless you like sparks.

If you can scrounge an additional $10, these would be money well spent: http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/enmofocomohe.html to put on your mosfet

There's no point in continuing to upgrade a mostly obsolete platform IMO. You would be much better off waiting and saving to get completely new core components (CPU/motherboard/RAM). Now that DDR2 memory is more expensive than DDR3 its a really good time to sell off what you have. The proceeds from that plus the money you already have saved will probably be enough to get a good 1155 or AM3 rig together.

I agree. Or if you can wait another 2-3months and save up a little extra cash, you can sell your current rig and upgrade to AMD's next generation platform, which probably won't be all that expensive.

Yeah, it's been for sale for a month. Coincidentally, I received a call from a guy 10 minutes ago who didn't want the computer but just the RAM, MOBO, CPU and Heat Sink. I sold it for $180 - $100 less than I paid but at least I got something for it...

Thanks to the both of you.

Thats a little better than I expected actually, ~$50 for triple core (since its a older Agena), ~$50 for board, so thats $80 for the memory, pretty sweet. Good luck with your new build
