First WC loop...issues

So I set up my loop with the following:

Apogee GT
Black Ice Extreme 120mm w/Sunon fan
DB-1 pump
MCRES Micro res.
1/2" tubing
Distilled w/PT Nuke
MX-4 TIM

I'm getting idle temps of 34 and load of 55. Not much of an improvement over my Super Mega. I'm thinking its one of the following:

- I'm still using the Super Mega's backplate and hardware to mount the Apogee on. The mounting screws are thick and its hard to slide the Apogee down them so there might not be firm contact. Plus there are no pressure springs.
- Too much/incorrect TIM application (I'm known for this).
- Some other unconsidered variable.

Any thoughts from the experts here? Thanks in advance.

Not an expert but it could be your TIM... I had this problem with my first water cooled rig. I was idling at 40. Properly applied some TIM and it dropped down to 13... Could also be the mounting but I can't provide much insight on that...

change the back plate, remount the cooler (use GOOD TIM)
but those temps arent bad, your idle is a little high for me
but I run a i7 are you doing this on the core2 quad or a newer processor

MX-4 wasnt that good, MX-3 was better.

Try get a hold of shin etsu and use a tiny drop. Also you could re apply tim and use less/more and see if it changes

And Super Mega is already a good cooler, a 120MM rad wont make much of an improvement imo.

it could also be your radiator choice,120mm will only get you high end air performance if you lucky.i would upgrade the rad as you have gone to the trouble of buying the other stuff,to use a 120mm rad i would just of brought a H50 or H70.

Any rad recommendations? I have an Antec 300 case so it'll probably have to be external (I have no problems with this, btw).

Definitely double check mounting and TIM as everyone else has said.

But I offer this; IMHO good air cooling (heatpipes w/good airflow, etc) can achieve the same temps as water cooling. After all, we still have to cool the heated water with the same ambient air as air cooling. One real benefit water cooling has over air is less fan noise.
