Reference 5850 Voltage Adjustments.

Hello there,

So, In the middle of upgrading my system and wanting to go for 2 5850s in crossfire. Already have an Asus brand one, but having some problems picking a second, particularly one that allows voltage adjustment. I'd go for another Asus, but they're impossible to find cheap or at all.

I've known since I purchased my first 5850 that non-reference models don't normally allow for software voltage adjustment as they lack the volterra chip, so went ahead and ordered a cheap store brand reference card which I could later flash to a bios that supports volt modding if needed. Got it today and it's a powercolor non-reference card, not what was shown on the site, but Novatech have already agreed to a refund and it will be collected tomorrow, so no real harm done.

But my problem now is finding another card, that's of reference design that allows volt modding. Preferably costing no more than £150ish. Found a couple going on ebay, both Sapphire reference cards, but can't find a definitive answer on whether or not they allow software voltage adjustment.

So my question is this, do the reference Sapphire cards have the volterra chip and allow volt modding? And do ALL reference 5850 models also have this chip? I've read some people say they do, others not sure, and some more saying that some brand cards require a specific bios. Can anyone here lend me their wisdom?

Thanks in advance.

All reference cards are the same so basically yes all reference cards have voltage controls.

All reference 58XX cards have voltage control. You can add voltage thru MSI afterburner.

I got a reference sapphire 5850 card, I can adjust it with trixx from sapphire so I think that it should be no problem.

Cool, cheers guys. I was pretty sure all the reference cards allowed volt changes, but I've seen a fair number of people have trouble doing so, and wasn't sure if it was just them or the hardware being stupid, and it never hurts to be sure.

Now to pick another another card and enjoy some OC CF goodness!

I think a lot of people don't realize in MSI AB that option needs to be unlocked before you can adjust Voltage, so a lot of people get the idea they can't do it, and also they don't realize their card isn't a reference model.
