Cheap file server

Hey

speccing up a file server so my main pc (sig rig) doesnt become full of drives and would like comments/advice etc

Would be based on my old PC which is a Gigabyte P35C-DS3R, E5200 taken back to stock from 3.5ghz) so it uses minimal power, 4GB ram and a 7600GS

Would have
4 2TB drives on the south bridge (Raid 5) (Would be purchasing)
2 1TB Drives mirrored in win 7 (what i currently have in sig rig, might not use them)

So effectively 5.6TB of space total, minus 50GB or so for as i would put win 7 on it (have a spare license from my old laptop that kinda flew when doing an emergency stop in car)

Would be used mostly for large files (500MB to 6GB) sharing them over the network

Only costs to me would be the 4 2TB Drives and sata cables to make things neat

Anyone got suggestions?

I suggest you don't use the onboard controller for RAID5 for starters...
You got anything lower power than a 7600GS for the Vid Card? That's a lot of wasted energy and heat for a file server. Also, I would consider using the onboard RAID 1 function over mirroring in Windows. Generally speaking Software RAID < Onboard RAID < Expansion Card RAID. Third, I don't know your comfortability factor, but I would suggest installing Linux over Win 7, as it will take up less hard drive space and use less system resources.

You can get decent performance out of Linux software RAID5 (mdadm)..
I'm sure your E5200 is a lot faster than my Opteron 165 (1.8) at stock, my fileserver nearly saturates a gigabit link on writes over the network (90-95 MB/sec) to a 5 disk RAID 5 array (5x 750GB).

Ubuntu server or Debian should work nicely if you aren't horribly Linux experienced.

You could always just remove it and go headless once you're done installing your OS.

Windows home server V1 is around ~$100/ It is really a great solution for data storage. It uses drive extender which basically eliminate the need for drive letters and allows you add different sized drives and will duplicate the files you want duplicated across multiple drives to save on space. It will also backup all of your PCs and if you need to recover the drive it takes around 30mins depending on the drive size. There are tons of plugins allowing much customizing to meet your needs most of which are free. I know Version 2, VAIL, is coming out I believe 2nd quarter this year but they have dropped drive extender and never put in a WMC server to support tv tuners. It does improve some streaming functions over Version 1 but there are 3rd party addins.

Not in my experience. In fact I've yet to find one.

You usually have to set the BIOS to 'ignore all errors' on POST though.
