Best LED fans for a radiator

Thread Starter
Hello all. In my first WC project I want to give my machine red LED highlighting. Are there any good red LED fans for the Black Ice GT Stealth? Or is there another way of getting the red LED lighting inside? I figured with a fan i could knock out two birds with one stone.

The last build I did in which I used red LED lit fans I went with http://www.xoxide.com/quadledred12.html Its a pretty basic clear fan with fairly bright LEDs.

Hmm. I'm not sure how good they are but FrozenCPU sells red led Yate Loons Medium speed for cheap.

Or get some Gentle Typhoon AP-15s along with a cheap LED tube from FrozenCPU.

I don't know how much I trust Yate Loons. Especially after the whole debacle over one vendor using cheaper quality Yate Loons.

:shrugs:

With a BlackIce GT Stealth I would go with fans more like the GT AP-15's, or other high static pressure fans. Yates are pretty good, but as it has been said, there is a difference between vendors. Petras sells the good yates, and they currently have the red led ones in stock if you want to go with those.

Other options are to use non led fans and use some red cathodes.

Alright so when it comes to RPMs in fans for the radiators, the Loons is a bit low. 1650 or something, while the typhoon gets me 1850. Is this a big deal? I see some people touting their typhoon 2150s around. How much does the fan speed affect the radiator cooling?

Its not so much the fan speed as it is the fans static pressure and air flow (cfm.)

When you put more restriction in the path of a fan in needs more pressure to keep its air flow up.

A good example of this. The really thin scythe fans (forgot their name) are able to push a lot of air, but if you put them on a heatsink their flow will drop drastically because they have no static pressure to force the air through the sink. A GT AP-15 on the other hand, while having less air flow in an unrestricted space, will push more air through a heatsink because it has higher static pressure.

Hope that makes sense.

PS, if you want a more general idea think of fans like cars. Your sports car will be faster than a diesel truck, but when you put a 5 ton load behind both of them the truck will outrun the sports car every day.

It's not always the fan that affects radiator cooling abilities. It's the static pressure of the fans in question.

It depends on the fin density of the radiators. The more dense it is the higher RPM's you need to push air through the radiator i.e. Black Ice GTX480. Less denser radiators like XSPC can use slower fans like the Gentle Typhoon AP14's. It all depends on the radiator you get. Personally I choose less denser radiators to remove the high noise of the higher RPM fans. But if you don't mind the noise or operate your PC in another room then sometimes you find some deals on the denser radiators.

Please don't.

I have only one of those and it's the most hated fan in my case. It's loud in vertical configuration and even louder in horizontal. Not to mention they used nice red LEDs on a fan with smoked clear plastic blades, meaning it puts off barely any light.

Only thing that was acceptable about them was airflow. But the bearing noise really throws me off.
