Which AMD CPU?

Thread Starter
I have a budget of around 200.00 to spend.

I am curious as to which CPU will be the best for me?

The best AMD Quad or should I get a 6 - core processor.

I need it to be the most future proof, I do not want to have to upgrade for a while. Should I look at Intel? Or will AMD give me what I need?

I only play games.

Go for the 955BE or similar quads. Almost no game around can even use a 6 core yet, it's just not worth the extra Imho. If you get a good buy, you could add a decent cooler on top to wind it up to 3.6-3.8Ghz. That should keep you happy for a long time. To be really futureproof, then you'd have to spend much more than $200.
For AMD that would mean switching to an AM3+ board so you could move to bulldozer, and any intel setup (i5/i7) would cost you heavily too.

To tell you the truth, I don't think you need to upgrade as it sits now. Keep it, and save up for when you are ready to move on to one of the new setups.

Thanks!

Any other opinions? I rather keep to AMD if I can.

I would rather wait and see what Bulldozer brings before you do anything...

Well Ive found if you wait, you end up waiting forever....literally. Just get yourself a 955BE and you will be set for a good while, especially if you get to overclocking that sucker.

Noticed you have a 27" monitor. I'd rather suggest you throw some money into another 5770 for xfire or a new 6 series card. If you want a cpu upgrade the 955 would indeed be your best bet.

Thanks man! I'm actually going to be getting a 6950, so a CPU upgrade WILL be necessary.

I am building up for RIFT and Crysis 2, I am a spare time gamer. So, when I play I like my experience to be at its best.

I would like to wait for BD but I don't really see the point. These Quad's and 6 core CPU's are more than enough for games. I couldn't care less about benchmarks or E-Peen, I just want to run games smoothly.

Since I don't care about benchmarks I find it fairly dumb to spend money on overkill parts.

Its looking like its a Quad for me. Wish I could justify buying a 6 core! lol

No need for a 6core when all you do is game. More gpu power will be much more beneficial. If you pair a 6950 with a 955 you'll be set for quite a while
