Help with new graphics card

Thread Starter
Hi all! I'm finally getting around to upgrading my computer and wanted to know what the best performance/price graphics card is. It also has to be a fairly significant upgrade from my ATi 4870 1gb. I've been looking at a the 6870, and there's a place that sells em for around $260 AUD. Also, ive heard that the 5870 is a more powerful card, but I'm not sure. Can someone explain that to me.? Also if there is an nvidia card about the same price, that might be good but preferably ati cause their cards are cheaper. The parts it will go with are an intel core i5 760, 4gb ram. I also heard that this card is good for crossfire. I probably wont pick up a second one but it doesnt hurt to be prepared. Oh yeah, with the aussie dollar so high right now would it be worth buying from an international seller, or is the price I found pretty tough to beat?
Thanks!

g'day, have you thought about getting the 5970(which is a dual GPU card)? they are going for as low as 400 NZD on TM..... I was under the impression its the fastest card from ATi/AMD to date, and beats the 6970(which is a single GPU card?)

5970 is significantly faster than a 6970 .

I had a 5970 and the fan noise is loud. And its about on par or maybe 5% faster than the 580 but I had terrible experience with the 5970 due to horrible drivers and microstuttering. Overall its a very fast card. I say get it because they are getting very cheap however the 6990 is coming soon but that card is prob gonna be 500-700 dollars.

I would suggest waiting for now, there aren't that many dx11 games out yet, and by the time they start coming out with more dx11 games the current ati and nvidia series will already be outdated. Newer gpu's are going to be at least 4x more efficient with smaller nodes...

That could be a good deal actually. if ATi can get their bull**** back together,
I mean 1.Proper Driver Support, 2.No Microshuttering 3. Lower On Noise and 4. Noticeably faster and stable then the HD5970; say about 30%-50% faster..then they can have my money.

But back to topic, if waiting a few more months say till mid year wont hurt then you should wait and save up, then maybe grab a 570GTX / 480GTX when the price drops down. or maybe just the 6990 if its within your price range by then..
