Most cost effective setup for 4800x2560?

Thread Starter
So I'm getting 3x 30" in portrait mode and honestly I just want to play SC2 smoothly on that setup.

So I ask, OCN, what would be the most cost effective GPU setup for this? I don't play many FPS games (5min at a time, usually) and besides SC2 I'd probably play a little ME2 or DA:O, otherwise it'll just be used for regular desktop usage and web browsing.

Now I know even dual 580s won't be able to play everything maxed out at this resolution, but I'm not trying to do that. I just want SC2 to play smoothly on Ultra.

So what do you guys think would be the most cost effective setup? I'm thinking 2x GTX 460 2gb in SLI.

GTX 560 is only 10% faster than the 460 clock for clock though, but it's $65 more per card on Newegg.

Don't want to deal w/ CF and Displayport problems w/ AMD. Plus I need 3x DVI-D connectors (no DP ports), and the 6900 only has one active DVI-D connection per card.

Gtx 580 3gb, get two of these and you should be set.

Like I said in OP, no need for dual 580s. If I needed/wanted top of the line performance I wouldn't have made this thread.

Just throwing this out there, you could get two of the Sapphire 5870 2GB Eyefinity edition. The one that has 6 Mini-Display ports, then XFire them.

EDIT: Nevermind, this goes against everything you stated above.

How would they even know?? Besides, I just play for fun with friends (Silver rank like 90, not even Gold lol), won't ever play competitively.

I'm probably just speaking nonsense, but can a GTX 460 really use 2GB of VRAM? I mean it's obvious 2GB is a minimum since each GPU will have to alternately render a 14MP image, but can a 256bit bus GTX 460 really transfer that amount of information effectively? I doubt it.

Therefore my choice is to go for a single 6970, or a 6950-flashed-to-6970, if you can go over the connectivity issues; there are 7$ dp to dvi adapters on newegg.

They do man, anything that edits the screen resolution. When you login to battle.net it checks your settings and registry for map hacks, bots, res edits. The game doesn't recognize eyefinity and there is a hack out there that lets you edit it, but it only works with the campaign because when you login it says your cheating. I dont' know if they ban you anymore, but you can ONLY play the campaign with achievements disabled. So it's not really worth it. Believe me, i've looked into it...A LOT! I live for SC2 and it's not possible online, you don't think if SC2 players could see more view of the map guys like HuK and NesTea wouldn't have invested in setups that would allow them tongue.gif blizzard doesn't let you. sorry man. But if you still want 3X portrait...i'd HIGHLY recommend those 3GB 580's or AT LEAST 2GB 6970's (or flash 6950's whatever, same diff)...i would lean to the 3GB buffer tho.

Doesn't 6970 and 6950 use 256bit bus too?

DVI-D and Displayport seems to have an issue where they do not send signal at the exact same rate, so it produces a permanent tearing on your screen. This and ATI drivers are the main reason I want to go w/ Nvidia on this one. Plus, SC2 performs better on Nvidia cards compared to their ATI counterparts.

Man that reallly sucks to hear, as SC2 is easily the game that I play the most. I guess I'll try to get it working, and if not, I'll probably start playing other games that support eyefinity/surround more.
