MSI P67A-GD55 overclocking help

Greetings everyone

I'm new to the community and from what I can see, you all are incredibly helpful, so I would like to ask for some assistance overclocking my new MSI P67A-GD55. I've read a couple of websites on overclocking, though I must admit I'm not too familiar with the whole process and I'm a little more than confused on what I should be doing. I definitely don't want to ruin my brand new rig. I did read the article on bit-tech but I feel like I can do better, but I'm not sure what to change or what to change it to.

Here's my system specs, which is also located in my sig.

CPU - Core i7-2600k
CPU Heatsink -Thermaltake FRIO (only one fan is attached since the other would block valuable RAM slots)
Motherboard - MSI P67A-GD55
Memory - Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB)
Graphics Card - Geforce GTX460
Hard Drive - 1TB Hitachi Desk Star
Power Supply - Corsair 850w
Case - NZXT Phantom
OS - Win 7 Pro 64bit

I'd like to aim for the 5Ghz+ range, if that's possible given my setup. I've seen a number of forums posts around the internets showing 5ghz, though none of them really mention how they achieved it (that or i'm not reading it properly).

This is my first Intel and MSI rig and the first rig I'm looking to overclock. I'm looking for all the help I can get to squeeze as much performance out of this while keeping the temps down. I apologize for sounding terribly noobish, but as I said, this is completely new territory for me.

keep in mind not all chip will hit 5ghz

and welcome to OCN!

change your multiplier to 50 xD

use 1.5 vcore, turn on internal cpu pll over volt

boot into windows and do stability test xD

easy right?

Thanks!

Holy crap, that sounds like idiot proofed overclocking I suddenly feel like a totally nub, LOL. I honestly thought it would be more complicated than that, given what I've read anyway. I'll definitely give that a shot when I get home!

I'm aware not all chips will hit 5ghz, I guess something involving their batch determines their ability to overclock; that's what I've read at least. If I do achieve 5+ I'll definitely post detailed information about my exact setup so others can benefit from it.

I've got Prime95, Cinebench, 3dMark11, CPUZ, GPUZ and the MSI control center. Is there anything else I need for benchmark and verification?

btw its just as easy as setting the multiplier to 50x and setting vcore to 1.5v and booting lol. Just turn on cpu pll overvoltage and turn off c1e, eist, and all those other things. BTW i have one of those GD65s for a customer, pretty straight forward board.

Oh okay. Thanks for the extra info. I only had cpu pll on.

I got my board to 5.0 (really 4989.5, but who's counting ) and stable. I changed the vcore to 1.56 after it bluescreened once (got a STOP 0x00000124 error). Ran the IntelBurnTest and it ran great. Cinebench ran well too, I think I got 6.65 or something close to that. I'll change those settings and see what it does.

Thanks again for your help

you should keep it below 1.52 or was it that intel said on their spec sheet to stay in safe zone.

Ah, I adjusted it back to 1.5. It seems to be running fine, passed the burn test and everything. I'm thinking the bluescreen was just a fluke at this point.
