Wild guess here. They're likely basing it on our current knowledge of life. Obviously that's not going to be perfect, but it's the best guess we have at the moment.

This. There are certain thresholds that life, as we know it, can tolerate before it's no longer possible to keep living. That's why it's THEORETICAL. They aren't saying it's fact.
