Need some help with Sandy bridge.

all this hype about Intel Chip set and the SATA ports degrading?
i have sold my 1366 System to buy a Sandy bridge Rig. i have a i5 2500K around mine. and i was waiting for the EVGA boards to come out.

if i buy a 1155 board will i have to send it back to intel for repairs?
what are they doing about this problem.

I'm without a decent Rig and i really badly need one.

Well since EVGA hasnt realeased a board yet, by the time they do im sure the fix will be on it.
Or if you want to use a current board use the SataIII ports since they are not affected. Although if you have a lot of components that require sata this might not work. Most boards have 2 SataIII ports, others like ASrock have more.

Thinking about the UD4?

I'm only going to be using 1 HDD with SATAIII. no need for a Disk drive.

so it's only the SATAII ports that are messed up?
can you plug SATAII things into SATAIII? you can right?

Yes. The SATA 3 ports are backward compatible.

The potential chip degradation only affects the SATA 2 ports.

how bad is the degradation?
we talking years or months?

There are multiple sources, and figures may vary, but here is one take on the prognosis:

Quote:
"On day one or two of using a device with the chip, you won’t see a problem,†Intel’s Mulloy said. “But two or three years out, we’re seeing degradation in the circuit on ports 2 through 5. We’re seeing a failure rate in approximately 5 to 20 percent of chips over a two- or three-year period, which is unacceptable for us."
Source

The impact of the calculated affect does not necessarily cause concern for some as a notable amount of enthusiasts will upgrade/side grade well within that time-frame.

Never the less I would be prone to exchanging the motherboard once a replacement is available so that the hardware has some honest resale value.

I can understand why Newegg/Tigerdirect stopped selling boards with the affected chipsets but they also stopped selling all the Sandybridge CPUs. Hopefully it doesn't indicate any more news is waiting to drop from Intel.

As of yesterday the local Microcenter here is still selling both the possibly defective boards and the supposedly fine CPUs, if you have one nearby you'll find lots to choose from.

As i understand it will take months untill the new MOB's with the fix will come out....
If user bought a MOB with the damaged SATA II problem how he can fix it? return the MOB and get a new one? or should he wait for the fix to come out them buy the MOB?
