Video Editing/Light Gaming CPU Cooler

Thread Starter
I need your help selecting a CPU cooler, I have narrowed my build down to pretty much the end. I plan on running Dual OSX with Kakewalk. As far as my build this is what I have:

CPU: i7 920
MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R
HDD: 2x Samsung F3 1TB
PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W
RAM: OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB)
GPU: EVGA 460 GTX 1GB 256-bit
CPU Cooler: ?

I plan on doing light gaming, the occasional Necrovison. But the majority of the time I will be editing 1080P video with Sony Vegas, Adobe After Effects, etc. I will also be doing a lot of photo editing with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Lightroom, etc.

I'm not really sure what I need but I know I want to keep it as low as possible. You have been really helpful with all of my questions and concerns up to now and I doubt you'll fail me now. So thank you everybody!

Several questions need answering.

1) Price range?
2) Do you plan on overclocking?
3) What case do you have? How much room is there in your case?

Also, you're only allowed to bump your own topic once every 24 hrs. This is a forum, not a live chat. Don't expect people to respond to your thread within 25 minutes.

^ This. Can't go wrong with the 212+, cheap, but effective. Mentioned tons of times as currently the best price to performance ratio cooler, goes great with a second 120mm for push/pull.

Plus you can eliminate another (roughly) 5C by adding another fan for push/pull.

It's a great option for those on a budget.

They both beat me to it. Just use this. There are 100 posts on this here though, just search if you're in need of a quick answer.

Well if you got $100 for a cpu cooler, it depends if you want something that's an excellent cooler and quiet like the Silver Arrow, or NH-D14.

Or if you want to save money, just go for the 212+ with another 120mm fan.

Though seeing as you plan to overclock, SA or NH-D14 are both top choices for that budget. Only problem is that they may take up space over a ram slot or 2.
I'd also recommend the Archon with dual TY-140's, but depending on where you buy, that may break your budget. Also I don't know if it may or may not fit in your case due to it's height, may not be possible to close the side panel with it on or not.

Yea, for $100 bucks, you can get a Noctua DH-14 or Silver Arrow. Both of those are around the same price at ~$80. They're about the best you can get. Downside is they're about the size of the moon.

For something more contained, you could look into the Prolimatech Megahalems or the Venomous-X, each with some good fans.
