Can someone dumb down the i3/i5/i7?

Thread Starter
There are a ton of great processors out there... hard not to just pick the AMD for its cost...

First, I'd like to know, what are the direct AMD competing processors to the i3/i5/i7?

Second, why would you choose the i3/i5/i7 over its "cheaper" AMD counterpart?

Building a computer for my cousin who will using it as his work computer running regular applications. Regular being no graphic processing, video editing, gaming, etc. He may game later on it, but for now, purely work.

Any clarification will help!

Thanks.

Best friend: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/2

Core i7 980X = No Competition
Core i7 920-950 = AMD Phenom II X6
Core i7 2600K = No Competition
Core i5 2500K = No Competition
Core i5 760, 750 = AMD Phenom II X4
Core i5 6x0/6x1 = AMD Phenom II X3 and low end X4's
Core i3 5x0 = AMD Phenom II X3 and Phenom II X2's

When overclocked though, all of the Intels move up a competition tier I'd say.

This list isn't exactly also... So anyone feel free to adjust or change.

Second Question: Intel provides a higher overclocking and clock for clock performance basis. For workstations the i7's smoke anything AMD has to offer. For gaming a basic quad core suffices whether it be AMD or Intel. Then for regular use, a simple dual core is perfect.
