Keyboard Suggestions

Hi, looking for a keyboard that's good to type on (mechanical?). Do some gaming, and also media keys are preferred, so I guess that rules out the Model M. Doesn't have to be mechanical, but that does seem to be the current recommendation. Price should be at or around $100. I saw the Logitech Illuminated keyboard fie around $40, is that any good? Thanks guys!

This seems to be popular choice. Not too bad. I just bought a Razer Black Widow Ultimate but it hasn't arrived yet. Seems these are well liked.

The first suggestion you'll probably be hit with is the Razer Blackwidow. It meets everything you're asking for (nice to type on -- I'm using one now, media keys via a function button, very decent for gaming), and right now is $75 shipped provided you live in America.

And, it's mechanical, which is icing on the cake (hell, it's the cake as far as I'm concerned)!

I just got a Razer Black Widow (non-ultimate) yesterday. I like it alot. Best keyboard I ever had. This thing is SOLID and HEAVY. Great design. IIRC the only thing that the ultimate has over the regular is backlit keys, and USB/ headphone jacks connections on the board.

After reading tons of reviews I settled on this board. It is the first mechanical I've had. The quality is excellent and the feel of the keys is superb. I would highly recommend it.

I read some of the lower rated reviews on NewEgg about the blackwidow. Apparently the keys are oriented weirdly, so it takes time to adjust? Also saw that it requires a lot of travel before the keys register. Is this true?
Newegg reviews, for the largest part, are a joke.
When people complain on Blackwidow reviews about the keyboard being "clicky and loud", and when another review on the normal Blackwidow is negative because "it doesn't glow", you learn to not take Newegg reviews seriously.

As for the the layout of the keyboard, I was used to it after no more than an hour or two of typing on it.

And who told you has a long travel time? Quite the opposite! The BW registers half way down it's travel path. It also requires comparatively less force (50g IIRC) than a rubber dome in order to actuate the key.

The one advantage Das Keyboard has over the BlackWidow is that it support n-key rollover via ps/2. Das Keyboard Silent and BlackWidow use the same key switches afaik.

There is very little travel needed to actuate they keys on the black widow. I'm using it right now and it's very sensitive. As for the layout I haven't really noticed a difference between my new black widow and my old logitech. The F keys are slightly more to the right however.

I'm liking my X-Armor but I havnt actually used a black widdow. X-Armor boards are said to have some quality control issues but mine is just fine.

If you arnt familiar, its essentially the same thing as the black widow ultimate minus the macros, but with nkro if you use the ps/2 connection (which is infinaitly more useful imo).

It's also a matte finish unlike the glossy black widow so its a bit nicer on fingerprints and the like. Completely basic layout aside from small windows and context keys (which is a big deal to me).

The bottom however is NOT really grippy at all. Its heavy enough that it doesnt need to be, but if you are clumsy and tend to shove keyboards all about your desk while gaming or typing, this will suffer the same fate.

you can also feel where the lettering on the keys is etched out and while it feels fairly solid and hasnt rubbed off at all for me, if you are a compulsive picker of bumps and lumps, you might just peel away the paint on these keycaps. People complain about the keys on saitek eclipse/cyborg boards wearing off like crazy too and ive had both for YEARS of heavy gaming with no ill effects so i guess I'm just gentle and a bad judge for this aspect.

Its also a bit smaller than the widow i believe, which is up to you to decide if its good or not.

At any rate Id suggest the X-armor over the black widow because of nkro but if you would prefer macro keys or just really like the look of razer (or dont want to risk playing RMA tag), the widow is also a great choice for you.

Personally i'd go black widow myself, I really haven't found a use for nkro at all, that includes typing and gaming.
