Quick PhysX Question

Thread Starter
My GTX580 will be here tomorrow and I just wanted to verify I can use 1 of my GTX260s for PhysX on DX11 games right?

I mean it won't be doing any rendering so it should at least one would think.......

If the game even uses physx yeah.

or I should say, is a game that is helped by off loading the physx processing onto a separate card, there are like 10 that do...
I was reading that someone benched this setup actually and having the physx run off a serperate card will bottleneck the 580... Better to just run the physx off the 580 and off the second card...

Sorry to threadjack, but what about a 460GTX and a 9800GT for physx??? I am thinking about buying a 9800 for cheap.

You wouldn't happen to have any links to that info?

Wow.... that doesn't seem to make sense to me.... gonna have to try that and see what happens....

When my 580 gets here tomorrow I'll post benchies.....

Suggestions on what all benchmarks I should post?

Thanks for all the info guys

From what I read the 580 basically has to wait for the physx to get done by the slower card causing a bottleneck... It was somehwere on this forum but please post some benchies if you get a chance.

i had this question a while back...if you look through my posts the links are in there somewhere where i asked about dx11 card with dx10 for physx...truth of the matter is that in most cases a 9800gt will give no performance boost...a 260 will give like 10 fps and your minimum will stay the same i think so effectively it's like not even having dedicated physx... i think most people agree that a 285 is a minimum for good fps boost...but newegg has 460s for so cheap you can pop one of those in as physics and definitely be very set!

EDIT: http://www.gamegpu.ru/action-/-fps-/...-test-gpu.html

that's the link, but i was off in my numbers a bit...those at the bottom of the page are for a gtx 480, and there's a 13 fps boost with a core 216 gtx 260...but i'm sure with a 580 the boost will be like 5 to 8 fps, maybe less...in the minimum department anyway...which is what i judge smoothness by...

EDIT 2: if you look at where the gtx 480 runs with a 9800gtx thats about where the 580 lies with a bit of an overclock so adding the core 216 gtx 260 your minimum fps will never go above 44, but your max will go to 88...whatever that means to you.

also it's a common misconception that the 580 "offloads" physx to the other card...the other card is "dedicated" to physx, so the minimum fps is determined by what that card can handle...it won't just throw some physx processing back at the 580...follow?

I tested this out last night. Dedicated Physx card 260 GTX and main card 570 GTX.

In mafia 2, The dedicated Physx card incresed FPS by 8 in the benchmark 52 FPS.
With only 570 card 44fps

And then forced CPU to do physx and i didnt even complete that test,

I did this with Metro 2033, Not benchmark. But i did play same part and did the same explosions with grenades. And i cant say i saw much of a diffrence either way but using CPU att physx was way slower.

And i cant get Batman to run Physx with the GPU only CPU, But then again that game runs without hickups either way.

So a physx card is worth it if u play Mafia 2 alot or maybe Metro

Even if the card is IDLE its still making the Main Gpu card warmer.
